The Systems Engineer Principal will play a leading role in a multi-disciplinary project team developing new and innovative solutions for the Royal Canadian Navy and its partners in the Anti-Submarine Warfare (AWS) domain.

The successful candidate will lead the systems project team to analyse system concepts, define requirements, create and document system designs and interfaces, manage subsystem requirements and verify / validate the system to ensure it fulfils customer requirements and need.

They may also be nominated to act as the Project Engineer or Senior Design Authority on various projects.

Candidates must be eligible to obtain the relevant security clearance required for the role, due to the nature of the programmes we deliver for our customers.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Applies a breadth and depth of engineering skills to develop solutions to complex problems within time, cost and quality constraints.
  • Supports the technical proposal and bid efforts.
  • Defines and manages system and subsystem requirements.
  • Manages trade studies to evaluate different potential design solutions.
  • Leads the System Design, through functional and non-functional analysis.
  • Defines the Integration, Verification and Validation strategy and manages this throughout the program.
  • Defines, manages and contributes to work packages for assigned projects.
  • Remains current on trends and emerging technologies, tools, safety, environmental protection and compliance.
  • Plays a leading role in technical / design reviews and risk management.
  • Acts as the Project Engineer or Senior Design Authority if nominated.
  • Actively contributes to the digital transformation of the business and seeks avenues for continuous improvement within the field.
  • Champion for change, not afraid to challenge methods or the status quo.
  • Mentoring and coaching others to support staff development and retention goals.


Role Requirements:
  • Detailed knowledge of the Systems Engineering lifecycle and formal processes and methodologies - preferably in the defense sector.
  • Experience across the whole project lifecycle from bid through to in-service support.
  • Experience communicating and interfacing with a wide range of stakeholders including senior management and external customers.
  • Develops and manages KPIs to measure and improve performance of work activities.
  • Required to maintain a security clearance.


Qualifications/Skills:
  • Degree level (or equivalent experience) in the Systems Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Has achieved 12+ years of experience in the Systems Engineering field - ideally within the naval defense sector or a highly complex engineering environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Use of standard office tools and proven experience with tools such as DOORS, UML tools, ERPs and other Configuration Management tools.


  • Desirable: experience with sonar systems and naval deployment, operation, integration and safety systems.
  • Desirable: working knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: safety systems, supportability, EMI/EMC or cyber.
