Purpose

Manage tax compliance process, including both income and indirect taxes, and assist the corporate Head of Tax with ASC 740 income tax provision. Prepare highly complicated calculations and written analyses.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction
  • Receive broad guidance from senior-level management relating to overall key objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters and general parameters for execution. Manage people and processes to ensure effective execution. Review work produced by staff for quality assurance.

At the Operational and Company Level
  • Support the Accounting and Financial Reporting function with its internal and external tax reporting needs.

Do the Work
  • Assist the corporate Head of Tax with the preparation of the quarterly and annual financial statement income tax provision computations and disclosures, pursuant to ASC 740 and other pertinent tax and financial statement guidance.
  • Oversee the federal, state, and local corporate income tax filings and compliance and/or review tax returns and work papers prepared in support of the income tax returns. This includes working with our current third-party tax return preparer, but also taking the lead role in the eventual migration in house of the income tax return preparation function sometime within the next 12 months.
  • Oversee the quarterly federal, state, and local estimated income tax and year end extension preparation and payment process.
  • Oversee the state and local sales & use tax, personal property tax, and annual Virginia BPOL and other state and local business license application functions, including overseeing annual registrations, and reviewing state & local nexus that might lead to initiating or discontinuing reporting where appropriate.
  • Assist the corporate Head of Tax in addressing tax audits and controversy, if any.
  • Assist the corporate Head of Tax in the review and documentation processes and procedures related to the department compliance with SOX-404 and other internal control requirements.
  • Assist the corporate Head of Tax in addressing the tax opportunities and implications of various corporate strategies and initiatives, including business development deals and expansion plans.
  • Work with external tax advisors and consultants as well as internal resources on due diligence evaluations and integration of tax accounting and government reporting compliance for business acquisitions and new geographic footprints.
  • Prepare ad hoc analyses and perform other assignments, as necessary.
  • Maintain knowledge of current tax laws and regulations, as well as stay current on all licensure renewal and CPE compliance.
  • Maintain relationships with external financial statement auditors and tax consultants.
  • Work well with external tax consultants on research and development tax credits and other one-off outsourced tax projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required. JD or LLM in Taxation a plus.
  • Master's or MBA degree in Taxation or a comparable graduate degree is preferred. CPA certification (in good standing) required.
  • Eight or more (8+) years of progressively challenging SEC-registrant corporate income tax and/or certified public accounting (tax practice) experience, including supervisory experience, required.
  • Progressively strong experience in multi-state taxation, accounting for income taxes (ASC 740) and corporate income taxes compliance is required.
  • Experience in M&A due diligence and corporate accounting integration preferred.
  • Experience in research & development tax credits, federal and state tax controversy/audits, and international tax issues including cross-border and transfer pricing is a plus.
  • Experience with various Tax Compliance and Tax Provision software preferred.
  • Strong tax research and analytical skills and a strong willingness to learn new tax topics required.
  • Deltek Vision experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).


Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Primarily indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
  • Mobility around an office environment.
  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds.
