Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a Technical Director - Tunnels to join our Mobility Global Business Area (GBA) in Canada. You will be responsible for providing technical leadership and oversight for the design and delivery of major tunnel projects across Canada, including transportation tunnels, utility tunnels, and other underground structures.

This leadership role requires deep expertise in structural and geotechnical aspects of tunnel design, extensive knowledge of tunneling methodologies and construction practices, and the ability to solve complex engineering challenges. The successful candidate will manage multidisciplinary teams, build strong relationships with clients and stakeholders, and contribute to business growth by identifying new opportunities and driving technical innovation. You will champion best practices, mentor team members, and foster collaboration and excellence aligned with Arcadis' strategic goals.

Role accountabilities:

The successful candidate will provide outstanding technical leadership to a multidisciplinary design team, driving the delivery of tunnel projects across Canada. You will apply advanced expertise in tunnel & shaft engineering to lead the development of design drawings, specifications, and calculations, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices. You will act as a trusted advisor to clients and stakeholders, maintaining strong relationships and delivering clear, timely, and professional responses to project inquiries. You will provide guidance during proposal preparation and participate in internal evaluations to ensure project success. Additionally, you will oversee the technical output of the design team, mentor staff, and assess performance to ensure quality and efficiency. You will prepare technical reports, studies, and correspondence while supporting pre-bid conferences, proposal evaluations, and contract discussions.

This position will also be responsible for providing expertise in tunneling methodologies such large diameter bored tunneling, NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) / SEM (Sequential Excavation Method), cut-and-cover, micro-tunneling, and other excavation techniques. Providing expertise in complex tunnel engineering involving conventional and sophisticated engineering practices. (Tunnel alignments, shaft geometry and design, temporary support systems, geotechnical data, structural analysis, design of tunnels and tunnel liner systems, cofferdams, slurry walls and cross passages.) Performing and/or reviewing numerical analysis using SAP2000, FLAC/FLAC3D, PLAXIS/PLAXIS 3D or other software such as Visual Modflow. Co-ordinating with Owner/Contractor teams to resolve issues related to tunnel construction. Ensuring that completed engineering and documentation work is reviewed for technical, Arcadis and client compliance. Ensuring risks are proactively identified, assessed and managed to avoid adverse impacts on the project. Working to ensure maximum client satisfaction, championing client care and proactively working with the client. Reviewing the performance of team members and developing them to their full potential by engaging in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor's University Degree in Civil Engineering and/or Geotechnical Engineering with 15+ years minimum post-graduate professional experience in related design and construction work experience in different types of tunnels (TBM, Cut & Cover, etc), including 5 years in a leadership role
  • Current P.Eng. certification or eligibility for membership with PEO (Professional Engineers Ontario) and/or EGBC (Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia)
  • Extensive experience in the tunneling/underground industry along with substantial technical management experience for small to large scale tunnel and underground projects
  • Ability to work independently and lead a group of designers and Engineers
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey design concepts and mentor junior staff

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Have experience in the delivery of Design Bid Build & Design-Build underground projects at all phases, including feasibility/ conceptual studies to detailed design
  • Experience in leading design in a consultant organization and working in a tendered design services environment

The salary range for this position is $114,590 - $212,810. The base salary represents Arcadis' hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
