Telecommunications Director of Operations Job Description

The Telecommunications Director of Operations will plan, direct, coordinate, and oversee operations activities in the organization, ensuring development and implementation of efficient operations and cost-effective systems to meet current and future needs of the organization. This position will report directly to the VP of Engineering & Operations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department
  • Oversees Time and Attendance duties, e.g., approving timecards
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations
  • Provides Management direction and counseling
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Creates and executes strategies to achieve business goals such as increasing revenues, removing expenses and developing a skilled, motivated, satisfied and diverse workforce.
  • Oversees area operations for North Carolina, Georgia and Arizona areas
  • Responsible for the field fulfillment customer experience, including Commercial Business fulfillment activities.
  • Oversees logistics operations
  • Partners closely with the Operations and Engineering team.
  • Strategically works with other functional leaders in forecasting customer activity and resulting resource requirements; identifies and manages resources allocation and needed employee skill sets within the area based on forecasted work levels.
  • Responsible for overseeing expense budgets including labor and capital.
  • Ensures the financial and operational planning processes are tied to business planning processes.
  • Monitors and analyzes all matters that impact the operational performance of the Region and takes appropriate action to address any trends.
  • Accountable for working with the region to meet or exceed regional P&L capital and forecasting specifically area controllable elements of the P&L.
  • Translates the organization's vision, values, and business goals into individual and team goals.
  • Manages operations metrics cost control initiatives and complex strategy and activity.
  • Reviews and submits reports that provide critical data to drive ongoing operational performance improvement.
  • Leads the Customer Experience/ employee experience effort for the field operations and Comm Ops teams. Coordinating with region and division Customer Experience leads.
  • Drives customer satisfaction through a laser focus on execution/fulfillment of the work.
  • Responsible for both internal and external (business partner) workforce resource, performance, and productivity
  • Works closely with business operations (Finance) in executing fleet, facility, and other asset management
  • Leads by example in creating an environment that encourages open communication, sharing ideas and best practices, and building strong cross-functional relationships.
  • Partners with Human Resources on selecting and managing the best talent possible.
  • Interprets, administers, and implements corporate policies and procedures.
  • Strong partnership with functional peers in other regions
  • Knows the competition and innovates appropriately.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

  • Basic knowledge of fiber optic theory which includes fiber loss, connector types, and the different types of fibers
  • Full knowledge of operating fiber optic splicing equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and building plans, document daily records and reports
  • Demonstrated ability to use and care for fiber optic test equipment, ruby light, power meter, and OTDR and document test results accurately
  • Ability to manage remote teams to complete designated amount of work in a specified time frame (e. g. , quality jobs per day), adjusting work assignments or schedules to meet changing work-related priorities or demands.
  • Ability to perform job activities outdoors in different weather conditions (e. g. , extreme cold and/or heat, inclement weather)
  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language to communicate with employees, contractors, suppliers, in person, on the phone, and by written communications in a clear, straightforward, and professional manner
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and decision making

  • Ability to pass pre-employment screenings (motor vehicle, drug, and background)


EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Valid Driver's license with satisfactory driving record
  • 10+ years of operations management experience installing and maintaining fiber optic products and services
  • 8+ years managerial experience of small, remote, field based teams
  • Certified Fiber Optic Technician certification preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of experience at an executive-level in a complex large size cable or telecom organizations (1 Million subs or more)
  • 10 years of experience must include a mix of operations and financial/analytical responsibilities including P&L.
  • Previous large market General Manager, VP Operations, AVP, or other similar level experience preferred.


WORKING CONDITIONS
  • May be required to work long and unpredictable hours including weekends
  • Working outdoors in all types of weather
  • Exposure to dust, fluctuating temperatures, and periodic high noise levels
  • Travel Required: 80%
