General Description of Duties
PLEASE NOTE: STARTING SALARY is $60,000 for NEWLY SWORN and UP TO $71,643 for SWORN LAW ENFORCEMENT WITH PRIOR EXPERIENCE

The Training Unit Deputy plans, coordinates, and actively participates in the facilities activities and operations of the Leon County Sheriff's Office Training Unit. This entry-level position focuses on supporting the Training Unit by helping deliver instructional programs designed for interactions with the public, including law enforcement, corrections, and civilian personnel. The role of coordinating and execution of assigned training activities with all departments and units, of the Leon County Sheriff's Office. The training provided to the agency includes but is not limited to firearms, use of force, TASER, driving, first aid, defensive tactics, and active shooter training. It will also include instruction on the related general orders, SOP's, case law, and Florida Statutes that are the topic of training. The Training Deputy is responsible for training for all sworn law enforcement, detention deputies, and civilian staff throughout the entire agency. The incumbent will be responsible for a wide range of training. This position adheres to the agency core values of honesty and integrity, accountability, trust and respect and commitment to excellence. To be successful in this position, the employee must encompass competency data entry and retrieval skills, time management skills, basic to intermediate computer skills, communication skills (both written and oral), interpersonal skills, customer service skills and problem-solving skills.

Essential Duties

  • The Training Deputy may assume all/some of the responsibilities of the Training and Standards Sergeant when the Training and Standards Sergeant is absent. During which time they are responsible for efficient operations of training functions and is directly responsible to the Captain of the Training and Standards Unit.
  • Contributes to curriculum enhancement, scheduling agency wide training and monitoring the sessions through the operational phase.
  • Coordinate de-escalation training throughout the agency.
  • Evaluate deputies' training, utilizing the employee evaluation program through the agency evaluation system, in accordance with general orders.
  • Able to demonstrate proficiency with all required training documentation, in keeping with best practices, in accordance with general orders.
  • Completing assigned projects and formulating strategies within the unit to address issues.
  • Assuming all the authority, duties, and responsibilities of their rank and exacting the proper policy and procedure of the agency and training duties from staff assigned to their unit.
  • Will ensure the application and training of 21st-century policing services are provided in a manner that addresses the issue of safety and trust of our citizens as well as the safety of our deputies.
  • Ensuring they and their subordinates adhere to General Orders of the Leon County Sheriff's approved practices.
  • Recognizing deficiencies in agency operations and taking or recommending proper action to address deficiency.
  • Conduct supervisory inquiries when appropriate.
  • Ensure members under their command receive required training and facilitate other training warranted for career development or job improvement.
  • Establishing/maintaining professional interpersonal relationships with members to effectively train the Leon County Sheriff's Office vision, mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Being knowledgeable and supportive of the LCSO's Strategic Plan and ensure assigned staff understand the goals and objectives.
  • Inform through the proper chain of command as necessary of problems in training events.
  • Ensuring all mandatory training needs are met and taught with compliance of general orders, policies and procedures, and Florida Statues.
  • Coordinate with the Florida Public Safety Institute (FPSI) for use of classroom and ranges.
  • Coordinate with outside organizations to provide training hosted by LCSO.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources throughout the hiring process regarding, but not limited to administering of physical agility test, scheduling swearing in ceremony and interviews.
  • Monitoring the Basic Recruit Academy classes to ensure recruit compliance and needs are being met.
  • Able to keep clear lines of communications throughout the team, for optimal performance.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead their team through change.
  • Able to effectively maintain instructional certifications for compliance.
  • Perform all duties as assigned as necessary for the agency.

  • Eligibility Criteria

    • High school Diploma or GED required.
    • Associates Degree preferred.
    • In compliance with 943.13 F.S., the position requires the employee to be at least 19 years of age, be a citizen of the United States, be of good moral character, must have completed a basic training program for Law Enforcement approved by the CJSTC and pass the Florida certification examination.
    • General Instructor Certification and at least (1) high liability instructor certifications required; And
    • Three (3) years as full-time law enforcement or correctional officer; And
    • Correctional Officers must be dual certified.
    • Must not be disqualified by any factors outlined in the application for employment.
    • Must maintain a primary residence within Leon County or a county adjacent to Leon (Wakulla, Liberty, Gadsden, and Jefferson Counties in Florida, Thomas and Grady Counties in Georgia).
    • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with a good driving history.

    Necessary Special Requirements
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
    • Position requires frequent work outdoors, during high and low temperatures and inclement weather or disasters.
    • Position has an increased risk of occupational exposure to hazardous and infectious materials.
    • Must be able to wear required uniform and equipment including a safety belt weighing 10 or more pounds.
