POSITION SUMMARY

The Trainmaster/Roadmaster plans all track-related activities, assists with oversight of train operations, and the safe and efficient movement of all trains within an assigned area or terminal. Oversees the progress and productivity of all assigned personnel to include prioritizing work efforts and setting performance standards; manages assignment of resources and assets, and processes for specified property. Executes the service plan to include: production, quality, cost containment and reassignment of resources, as necessary, to achieve maximum efficiency. Ensures the safety of crews; meets operational and financial targets as outlined by the service plan and associated key performance indicators.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operation and the Federal Railroad Association (FRA)
  • Promote and support the safety program: lead the safety goals for all Maintenance of Way groups on the railroad
  • Develop work plans and track maintenance activities to support operating efficiencies and the railroad's customer service commitments
  • Work with the upper management to develop, prioritize, assign and execute engineering programs for maintenance operations and capital budgets
  • Ensure engineering instructions pertaining to inspections, maintenance, and construction work is adhered to by field personnel
  • Articulate a focused, clear vision for the strategic priorities of the business: aggressively drive those of highest importance throughout the assigned area or terminal
  • Ensure compliance to defined operating practices and procedures: promote a safe work environment
  • Manage the operational testing program: observe, document, and evaluate safe work practices per operating rules and act upon results
  • Meet the tactical goals of the service plan: manage assets, report results, define problem areas and implement solutions; metrics include asset utilization, execution to plan, and cost of quality and safety performance
  • Conduct regularly scheduled employee meetings to emphasize safety and discuss mitigation of risks
  • Investigate incidents: determine root cause, escalate findings, and implement corrective actions as necessary to prevent recurrence
  • Manage resources and assets within budget
  • Coordinate with commercial and/or customer solutions unit to satisfy customer expectations
  • Perform CDL work to meet qualifications of the FMCSA Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Subpart B: Qualification and Disqualification of Drivers and other regulations as applicable, including but not limited to, Part 391.11


OTHER DUTIES
  • May serve as a first responder to critical incidents
  • Assist with training programs; identify the appropriate type and level of training needed for engineering work groups
  • Develop an understanding and knowledge of the business and service needs of internal /external customers within the region
  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Wear required protective equipment such as: hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots or safety glasses
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime and various shift work
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in interviewing, hiring, discipline, and training processes for new employees
  • Ensure responsibilities of all subordinates are defined and understood

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 3-5 years' job related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Broad understanding of railroad operations
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, right-of-way maps and construction plans
  • Write legibly for reports and other work documents
  • Thorough knowledge and adherence of FRA track safety standards; document items of FRA non-compliance
  • Execute knowledge of contracts and contract management
  • Read and comprehend published rules, procedures and manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; effectively communicate with all levels of employees and business associates in a clear, concise and professional manner
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with high attention to detail
  • Demonstrate problem solving and troubleshooting skills resulting in effective resolution

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
  • Valid State Driver's License - CDL (or attain one within 90 days); pass medical certification and Drivers Qualification File, pass DOT Drug & Alcohol
  • Qualified on FRA Title 49 Part 213 and Part 214


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Previous experience in Rail Transportation, Supply Chain Logistics, Manufacturing and/or Oil & Gas industries
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • Incident investigation and reporting experience
  • Experience working with employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

Locomotive Engineer qualified per FRA standards

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Mostly exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather including: snow, rain, heat, and sub-freezing temps; some work in climate-controlled office


TRAVEL
  • Daily travel as business requires during scheduled work hours


COMPENSATION
  • Estimated Starting Salary: $82,819
    • Exact starting salary is determined by merit; seniority; geographic location; education, training, and/or experience related to job duties and responsibilities
  • FSLA Status: Exempt, Not Eligible for Overtime
  • Eligible for Participation - Annual Discretionary Bonus
