The successful candidate must be located near a Canadian Blood Services site and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a regular full-time Transfusion Medicine Nurse Specialist Supervisor to join our dynamic Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services team.
The Medical Laboratory and Stem Cell Services team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services in two key areas. Medical services include all medical activities of the blood operator provided by the nursing and medical team including donor assessment, product support, and programs such as Specialized Cells Program, Lookback Traceback program, Transmissible Disease Donor Notification Program, Adverse Transfusion Reaction Reporting, Hospital Relations includes all areas of hospital account management such sharing disposition and inventory data, best practices, and NAC endorsed recommendations to optimize utilization and improve patient outcomes. The Hospital Relations team also gather and analyze hospital customer demand intelligence to help optimize collections targets.
In this role, you will provide input and offer support and expertise that will promote efficient, timely and cost-effective operations related to the medical services programs. You will provide support to physicians in overseeing developing and maintaining the scientific and medical aspects of patient and donor related services offered by Canadian Blood Services and may acts as a designate to the physicians as directed. You will also provide input into the strategic plan of medical services and will monitor emerging trends and develop approaches to managing said trends as required.

Formula for success
- Utilizing your ability to lead and work collaboratively across diverse teams, you will support operations of Medical Services and associated programs as assigned (e.g., Specialized Cells program, Transmissible Disease Donor Notification, etc.). You will actively support Medical Services in the oversight, development, and promotion of programs to establish best practices for transfusion medicine and evaluate efficacy of programs.
- You will be expected to support Medical Services and may act as a designate in assuring on-going communication with respect to matters that could affect medical practices between Canadian Blood Services and hospitals serviced by Canadian Blood Services.
- Leveraging your knowledge of transmissible disease related issues, health education and counselling, you will provide consultation/input and make recommendations on medically related issues (e.g., transmissible diseases, donor health and recipient safety, etc.) with respect to processes, policies and regulatory requirements and is accountable for these recommendations.
- You will be required to liaise with the Provincial Blood Coordinating/Provincial Health Authority offices, as required.
- Drawing on your excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you will liaise and coordinate activities with other medical team members to provide education programs/sessions. You will develop and provide transfusion medicine related training and education to internal and external stakeholders.
- You will consult, collaborate with, and support Diagnostic Services or Immunology labs.
- Concentrating on your strong organizational and prioritization skills, you will support the Hospital Liaison Specialist (HLS) and develop and provide transfusion medicine related training and education to internal/external customers. Participate in graduate medical education programs as required.
- Focusing on your proven project management and leadership skills, you will serve as the medical representative on local, regional, and national working groups, based on direction from Associate Medical Director.
- You will be required to provide support to the National Call Centre (NCC).
- Utilizing your excellent communication and presentation skills, you will present at local, national, or international scientific conferences.
- Leveraging your knowledge and experience, you will, as appropriate and as allowed by regulations/professional licensure, act as the physician designate for provision of medical consultation, recommendations and decisions related to patient specific transfusion medicine requirements.
Desired education and skills
- Completion of a college diploma or university degree in Nursing is required, with a degree being preferred.
- Current practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses' Association within your provincial jurisdiction.
- Five (5) years' recent related experience.
- Knowledge of transmissible disease related issues, health education and counselling.
- Knowledge of blood transfusion, collection, and testing.
- Previous experience in a regulatory environment and in a blood collection environment is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to use computer-related equipment including information systems, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Experience in MS Office 365 and eProgesa is considered an asset.
- Previous experience in a supervisory role is an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
