JOB SUMMARY

The Transportation Coordinator plays a critical leadership role in supporting Houston ISD's safe, efficient, and reliable transportation services. Responsible for overseeing daily terminal operations-including route planning, driver coordination, compliance, and staff supervision-this role ensures that students receive timely and secure transportation aligned with instructional schedules and campus needs.

In line with HISD's high-performance culture and service-driven mission, the Transportation Coordinator collaborates closely with drivers, dispatchers, fleet teams, and school administrators to uphold safety, improve service delivery, and support continuous improvement. This position also plays a key role in cultivating a culture of professionalism, accountability, and operational excellence across the transportation team.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lead, manage, and evaluate transportation staff, including Unit Leaders and support personnel, to ensure high-quality service, professionalism, and adherence to performance expectations.
2. Design, coordinate, and adjust daily bus routes and schedules to optimize efficiency, minimize delays, and meet the evolving transportation needs of students and campuses.
3. Support recruitment, training, and evaluation of bus drivers, ensuring full compliance with HISD policies, safety protocols, and state transportation regulations.
4. Collaborate with fleet operations teams to verify that all vehicles are inspected, maintained, and fully operational before the start of each school day and prepared for the following day's routes.
5. Monitor and enforce transportation safety standards, including driver pre-trip inspections, check-ins, vehicle cleanliness, route timeliness, and proper parking procedures.
6. Assist in investigating and resolving transportation incidents, accidents, and service complaints, ensuring thorough documentation and timely corrective actions that prioritize student safety.
7. Identify and implement operational improvements related to routing efficiency, fleet usage, and service delivery to support HISD's commitment to continuous improvement.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED

8. Maintain accurate and auditable records of driver credentials, safety training, and compliance with district policies and applicable transportation regulations.
9. Serve as a primary liaison for school administrators, families, and stakeholders, addressing transportation-related inquiries, concerns, and updates with professionalism and urgency.
10. Coordinate extracurricular and field trip transportation logistics, ensuring proper scheduling, vehicle availability, and alignment with school timelines and staffing resources.
11. Perform other job-related duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of HISD's transportation operations and student-centered service model.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree, preferred

Commercial Driver's License (CDL), required.

WORK EXPERIENCE

At least 5 years' experience in school bus transportation services or district/central office of a large urban school district.

Work Leadership. Regularly provides project management or team leadership to a group of two or more employees. Directly manages and supervises Unit Leaders.

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

Work is substantially complex, varied and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the department. Supervision received typically consists of providing direction on the more complex projects and new job duties and priorities.

BUDGET AUTHORITY

Compiles and organizes data and figures.

Decisions are made on both routine and non-routine matters with some latitude but are still subject to approval. Occasionally expected to recommend new solutions to problems and improve existing methods or generate new ideas.

Collaborate and solve problems - works with others to resolve problems, clarify or interpret complex information/policies, and provide initial screening/negotiations without approval authority. Interactions are typically with customers, senior level professional staff, and managers.

Leads others in the resolution of highly sensitive and confidential issues on behalf of the department. Acts as a trusted advisor and becomes involved in the customer's decision-making process including presenting alternatives and information and applying persuasion and negotiation skills in the resolution of problems.
Monitors customer service standards.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment, which does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements.
Valid Texas driver's license with applicable insurance coverage.
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including personal computer and peripherals.
Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
Ability to carry and/or lift less than 45 pounds.
Environment: Prolonged or irregular hours, including some weekends; frequent districtwide travel.
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress, fast-paced.
