Treasurer & Controller (SafePort)

The Treasurer & Controller (SafePort) will ensure the effective setup of accounting and financial reporting functions to meet the needs of the organization, including statutory and investment reporting, as well as establishing bank and audit/tax relationships. The individual in this position will work with a dynamic team of dedicated professionals who are committed to excellence in fiduciary and financial accountability and reporting. Primary responsibilities oversight of assistant controller and senior accountant, producing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, analysis for senior management and reporting to the organization's other stakeholders on both a STAT and GAAP basis. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of GAAP and statutory accounting principles ("STAT"), as well as financial policies and controls, attention to detail, and the ability to deliver work products with a high level of accuracy while consistently meeting related deadlines.

Essential Functions

• Responsible for the timely and accurate completion of all quarterly and annual statutory financial statements and related filings, ensuring compliance with NAIC and other regulatory requirements
• Lead reinsurance accounting activities, including researching the accounting impact of new reinsurance agreements and programs
• Manage month-end statutory accounting financial close process, including review of journal entries and key account reconciliations
• Manage month-end GAAP financial close process, including taxes and financial statement consolidation
• Manage income taxes, including provisions, and review of tax returns prepared by outside tax firm
• Perform technical accounting research to determine correct statutory accounting treatment of complex or unusual business transactions
• Ensure compliance with statutory accounting standards, developing policy memos to document technical accounting treatment

• Manage all statutory regulatory filings, including premium taxes, state department of insurance information requests, and audit inquiries
• Coordinate annual financial statement statutory audit and GAAP audit
• Support various system implementation initiatives
• Provide timely accurate data to feed carrier and holding company financial forecasting models
• Lead response activities for all regulatory inquiries
• Lead, mentor, and develop staff
• May perform other related duties and special projects as assigned or requested

Minimum Requirements

Education, training, and experience:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting or business-related field and/or equivalent combination of High School Diploma/GED, training and work experience
• Minimum 6 - 7 years of experience in accounting role
• Experience with financial statement consolidations
• Experience in accounting for insurance and reinsurance companies
• Experience in public accounting
• Experience in insurance with statutory accounting experience highly preferred
• Certified Public Accountant or CPA candidate highly preferred

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Thorough understanding of GAAP and STAT, policies, and internal controls
• Knowledge of Microsoft office suite with expert level Excel and PowerPoint skills
• Detail-oriented and the ability to deliver work products with a high degree of accuracy
• Strong verbal and written skills, and the ability to convey complex information
• Effective prioritization and management of multiple projects
• Available to work across time zones with flexibility to follow up on items outside of business hours, including weekends
• Ability to handle multiple tasks with accuracy, able to prioritize effectively and meet strict deadlines, both independently and as part of a team
