General Summary

This position is responsible for the leadership and oversight of the Underwriting function and department for the Southern States Insurance Exchange (SSIE), Southern States Underwriters, LLC (SSU), and SSC Insurance Agency, LLC (SSCIA). This senior position works with an underwiring team and other management personnel to achieve corporate underwriting and profitability goals. Responsibilities entail an active role in renewal accounts and new business underwriting; departmental and staff management, operational performance reporting, and strategic management and planning.

Essential Job Functions

Oversee and direct the Underwriting Department, including staff management, in order to achieve underwriting profitability and growth of The Exchange.

Lead underwriter on the overall majority of the SSIE book of business:

All SSCIA / Agency major Renewals and lead or approval role in all other renewals, plus all SSCIA / Agency New business opportunities.

The Southern States Cooperative (SSC) and affiliated Member Cooperatives annual account Renewals; working with SSC personnel in gathering renewal information and delivery of renewal terms. (SSC is the largest single account of SSIE.)

Note: the overall book of business is approximately 90% Renewal and 10% New - Agency generated, plus SSC and affiliated Member Coops.

Review claims activity, loss control surveys, and other relevant information for compliance with existing company policies and to determine pricing and conditions; handling exceptions as required and recommending changes / improvements. Ensure proper documentation is in all policy files to support the rationale for writing and pricing the business and to comply with Insurance Departments' requirements.

Line setting responsibility to determine the ultimate amount subject by location insured by SSIE and placing facultative reinsurance where necessary. Umbrella submissions for risks needing approval for the treaty. Provide reinsurers/broker with any additional information they may need on a specific risk or book in general.

Monitor Insurance and Agricultural trends and product offerings, evaluate products and pricing structures; identify and implement product opportunities to meet customer coverage needs and SSIE objectives.

Collaboration with the related operational units of the Exchange: Agency, Claims and Accounting Departments. Both in position as Underwriting Manager as well as strategic leadership role.

Regular interface with SSCIA / Agency personnel on account renewals and proposals; assist with questions posed by agency personnel and insureds at renewals and thereafter.

Mentor and coach team members with their professional growth and development; provide constructive feedback, guidance, and support to enhance individual and collective performance

Execute special projects and perform all other job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

College degree, preferably with concentration in Insurance, Finance or similar field.

Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) required, other designations a plus.

Minimum of 10 years insurance industry experience, preferably insurance carrier underwriting

Reinsurance transactions experience (including both treaty and facultative reinsurance

Supervisory/management experience

Strong teambuilding skills to maintain lasting relationships with other departments, key business partners, and government agencies

Strong problem identification and resolution skills

Requirements

Proficient with Microsoft Office Products and insurance systems design/process.

Strong problem-solving ability; reasoning and judgment/decision making

Work Environment

Job functions are performed in an office environment

While traveling may have contact with hazardous materials and drive/travel and work in adverse weather conditions
