Job Purpose

BorgWarner is actively seeking an experienced and collaborative professional to join their staff as their new Absence Management Specialist. In this role, the Absence Management Specialist will be responsible for US absence management, including time off, leaves of absence (including FMLA, ADA, statutory leaves), emerging and existing local sick time requirements adherence. This position works closely with external vendors, internal payroll, HRIS, employees and business unit HR contacts.

The Absence Management Specialist supports the Benefits Team to drive forward strategy and administration of leaves and time off. It will be a hybrid subject matter expert (70%)/administrative role (30%).

Key Responsibilities:

Absence Management:

  • Establish and adhere to an absence management strategy to simplify and fine tune the existing program, which includes leaves, disability (short- and long-term), time off, and sick time


  • Act as the primary point of contact for employees, managers, HR partners, and third-party leave administrators to ensure a seamless leave process.


  • Conduct market checks and full RFPs, when necessary


  • Act as subject matter expert (SME) by consulting, advising, administering, and providing training to HR, employees, and those in need of accommodations, FMLA leave, disability, and time off


  • Collaborate with legal counsel to address complex cases.


  • Update and/or develop leave policies and ensure policies are appropriately followed


  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local leave and time off laws


  • Determine areas of opportunity for process improvements and streamlining


  • Create user guides and checklists


  • Create and deliver training and communication materials to educate employees and managers on leave policies and procedures.


  • Maintains knowledge of all applicable leave and accommodation laws including the FMLA, ADA, and state and local laws


  • Performs other related duties as assigned


Absence Administration:

  • Facilitates other leave requests, which may include accommodation requests under the ADA.


  • Partner with payroll to ensure accurate tracking of leave-related pay, benefits, and state reimbursements.


  • Data entry of continuous leaves into Workday


  • Audit leaves of absence reporting from vendors


  • Review time and attendance systems (Kronos/UKG) to confirm work dates


  • Intervene in file issues between vendors


  • Work with HR, payroll, and other departments to ensure smooth leave administration and payments. Maintains complete and accurate records of leave and accommodation requests in accordance with specified legal requirements and documentation of best practices


  • Serves trained on and serves as an occasional back-up for benefits administration


  • Helps Benefits Team with open enrollment activities


What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field


  • 5-7 years of experience working with leaves, disability, and/or absence management, preferred


  • Knowledge and experience working with benefits vendors


  • Strong analytical and project management skills


  • Sense of urgency, attention to detail and accuracy, well organized and able to prioritize


  • Ability to analyze data, perform mathematical calculations in verifying rates and budgets


  • Strong communication and writing skills; ability to prepare written summaries in PowerPoint to present to management


  • Proficient with Microsoft Office


  • Knowledge of HRIS systems, Workday preferred


  • Must be comfortable working independently and making decisions


  • Possess critical thinking skills and must be a problem-solver


  • Ability to remain open to change and new information and ideas and adapt as necessary

$78,800 - $108,350
