Role Summary

The goal of a vCIO is to develop their skills to take on a leadership capacity with your own portfolio of vCIO clients. As such, you will maintain a relationship with these clients as the Virtual Chief Information Officer, and as a trusted advisor. Attaining this goal will require you to develop confidence, a broad understanding of the tools at your disposal, the trust and support of your vCIO peers, and the development of a trust relationship with clients. It is the objective of the vCIO team to guide you on this journey to achieve your goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

You will be responsible for participating in the vCIO group, including, but not limited to:
  • Consulting for vCIO clients in a supporting (or lead role, where assigned):
    • Client meeting coordination and/or support
    • Attendance to regular client meetings
    • Assessment and discovery; gaining an understanding of client business management, structure and operations
    • Documentation of client information
    • Identification, research and evaluation of technology and business process solutions
    • Development strategic planning and road maps for IT and business objectives
    • Development of policy and procedures
    • Development and administration of GRC (Governance, Risk & Compliance) programs
    • Delegation and/or performance of evidence collection, as applicable
    • Development of budgets, implementation schedules
    • Project coordination
    • Report writing
    • Coordination and communication with Clients (both POCs and internal staff); Nucleus departments (Projects, Procurement, Support); and/or external consultants, suppliers, and service providers
    • Travel, when necessary, to client offices and/or operating sites; including planning and coordination of travel itineraries
    • Logging of consulting effort, both billable and non-billable, through calendar entries and/or time records
  • Assistance with vCIO team Business Development objectives:
    • Assistance with closing sales opportunities, including pre-sales meetings and/or technical support
    • Case study preparation and assistance with marketing materials
    • Communication of identified business development opportunities to the team
  • Internal operations:
    • Participation in regular vCIO team meetings
    • Research and Development for the vCIO resource database
    • Assistance with organization and templates for vCIO operations


Required Skills and Qualifications

In addition to continuous observation of market and global trends, it is required for a vCIO to gain a comprehensive understanding of the requirements in the CIS framework (and/or NIST), SOC2 Type II (and/or ISO27001), and ITGC controls typical of Canadian NI52-109 standards. Additionally, it would be beneficial to gain an understanding of PIPEDA/GDPR/CCPA privacy standards, and other frameworks specific to Nucleus clients.

  • Must have at least 10 years of experience in the IT Industry
  • Knowledge of multiple products including Microsoft, Cisco Meraki, Google Workspace, Egnyte, and basic accounting systems is preferred.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is an asset.
  • Must be personable and resourceful given the independent nature of the role.
  • Must have a solid IT background and consistently keep up to date with advancements of the field.
  • Must be able to drive process improvement and advancements in a matrix organization and lead clients through decision making and implementation of IT strategies.
  • Must have strong strategic and business decision making skills.
  • Must have the ability to understand the nuances of work culture differences based on the client's work environment.
