Job Purpose

The Veterinarian is responsible for the health and well-being of animals in the care of the Ottawa Humane Society, including for owned animals aboard the OHS Mobile Spay Neuter Clinic vehicle and in community clinics. This position is responsible for performing veterinary rounds and surgical and medical treatments and interventions.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform veterinary rounds to assess and treat animals within established protocols
  • Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols
  • Examine animals pre-operatively to determine their ability to withstand surgery
  • Perform surgical sterilizations in a safe and efficient manner utilizing high volume sterilization techniques
  • Perform other surgical interventions including dentistry
  • Provide crisis medical services in emergency situations
  • Provide direction and supervision to the surgical team
  • Provide necropsy and other tests and assessments to provide expert opinion and testimony
  • Ensure practice is in accordance with CVO regulations
  • Provide case consultation to other staff and managers
  • Maintain excellent relationships with the veterinary community, other service providers, professionals and OHS partners
  • Assist in the development of standard operating procedures within assigned functional areas
  • Provide advice and assistance to directors, other managers, the CEO and the Board of Directors and its committees as required
  • Be thoroughly familiar with, and ensure adherence to, pertinent legislation, regulations, guidelines, OHS policies, procedures, collective agreement, good animal care practices, and veterinary standards of practice and best practices
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of social, environmental and cultural issues relating to animal welfare, herd health, husbandry, shelter medicine and veterinary practices
  • Produce and maintain accurate reports, records, and files
  • Participate in supervision, evaluation, training and other meetings as required
  • Participate in the assessment of staff performance
  • Provide supervision and guidance to staff within clinic operations
  • Support the activities of staff, volunteers, students and work placements and provide orientation and training as required
  • Be familiar with and ensure compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures
  • Participate in the identification and evaluation of OHS program goals and objectives
  • Participate in professional development opportunities
  • Represent the OHS in a professional manner
  • Participate in public relations and promotional activities as required
  • May be required to assume some of the responsibilities of Chief Veterinarian

Qualifications
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
  • Current College of Veterinarians of Ontario License
  • Minimum of two years' clinical experience with small animals
  • Demonstrated excellent crisis management skills
  • Small mammal, bird and reptile experience an asset
  • Supervisory and/or training experience is preferred
  • Experience with large animals and wildlife is preferred
  • Training in high volume spay/neuter is preferred
  • Professional working proficiency in spoken English and full professional proficiency in written English is required

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
  • Employee may be required to work occasional evening, holiday and weekend shifts
  • Employee will be required to be on-call during specified hours on evenings and weekends
  • Employment is conditional upon the ability to provide services in a safe manner, including, but not limited to, lifts and transfers of large animals and interaction with potentially aggressive animals
  • Employees will be required to work off-site across the City of Ottawa in tight work conditions
  • Employees will be required to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity
  • Employee may be required to work outdoors in inclement weather
  • Employee will be required to wear a uniform designated by the employer
  • Employment is conditional upon maintaining confidentiality of OHS information
  • Employment is conditional upon the ability to work around all species of animals safely
