Duties and Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities: As a Shelter Veterinarian, your duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Performing medical assessments, triage, and emergency treatment for ill and injured animals
- Managing and treating animals with potential zoonotic diseases, ensuring compliance with public health standards
- Assisting in the development and implementation of medical protocols and shelter care procedures
- Providing expert testimony and assistance in cruelty cases, including participation in legal proceedings when necessary
- Conducting staff training and educational sessions on shelter medicine, best practices, and animal care
- Promoting a clean, safe, and efficient work environment while adhering to all regulatory and safety guidelines
This role requires the ability to work independently, maintain professionalism under pressure, and manage complex medical and ethical decisions with care and precision. You will be expected to uphold the highest standards in both clinical care and public service.
Education, Experience, Licensing
Qualifications: To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent from an accredited veterinary institution recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)
- Active Florida Veterinarian License in good standing at the time of hire
- USDA Category I license, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment
- Ability to obtain a Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
Supplemental Information
- Standard work hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
- Flexibility for additional hours as required by operational needs
- On-call responsibilities for after-hours telephone consultation regarding medical emergencies
