Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage the underwriting process from initial stages of loan application to the final stage of loan securitization.
- Work within a team and oversee the due diligence of loans for securitization.
- Analyze the components of each loan and property to ensure they comply with both general credit quality measures, securitization standards, and the company's credit policies and procedures.
- Approve or reject loans within limited credit approval authority
- Communicate and frequently discuss risks and mitigants of each credit decision on a loan among internal and external parties.
- Keep informed of current practices in loan underwriting and trends within the CMBS and securitization industry.
- Conduct property site inspections as part of the CMBS underwriting process, evaluating physical condition, surrounding area, competitive positioning, and overall suitability as collateral; document findings with detailed reports and photographs to support credit analysis.
- Serve as a resource for B-Piece buyers during the loan sale process, responding to investor inquiries, providing additional due diligence materials, and articulating SMC's credit view.
- Incorporate an understanding of rating agency methodologies into the underwriting process to anticipate their review criteria, ensuring loans are executable and meet profitability targets.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Strong analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Excellent presentation skills
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or Finance. MBA with emphasis on real
estate and/or finance may be substituted for a portion of work experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the mortgage or finance industry
- Minimum 3 years of experience in underwriting of commercial mortgages for securitization
