ROLE SUMMARY

Reporting directly to Alliance's Chief People Officer, the Vice President, Human Resources (HR) Operations plays a vital role in Alliance's overarching people strategy and talent systems execution - ensuring we attract, grow, and keep top talent at all levels of the organization to work in service of Alliance scholars and families. The Vice President, HR Operations will lead the HR Operations teams (including compliance and reporting, the operations of the staff experience from entry to exit, and benefits administration) of 9 staff members and lead transformational work to improve Alliance's human resources functions.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide departmental leadership, organizational HR strategy and direction, and systems-level thinking.
  • Lead from a compelling multi-year vision and data-informed position that delivers on quality improvements for staff through strategic changes across talent, including but not limited to HR systems, talent policies and practices, enhanced benefits, and management skills that support Alliance's ability to deliver on its mission;
  • Serve as a strategic advisor and functional expert to the Chief People Officer, Talent Leadership Team (Vice Presidents leading Talent functions), and other organizational leaders regarding Talent strategy (staff life cycle from entry to exit, including how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) informs every element of the staff life cycle), initiatives and issues;
  • Ensure compliance with employment law and lead the organization through necessary changes to maintain ongoing compliance including updating the employee handbook, training staff and supervisors, and partnering with internal and external counsel.
  • Implement and ensure strong system execution that provides accurate data, strong employee services, and high-quality coordination and partnership with other talent functions and school leaders.
  • Design and implement systems-level protocols to ensure that all HR operations provide an exceptional experience for staff while aligning and complying with Alliance policies, individual school charters, and state and federal labor laws, and ensure consistent, fair, and equitable application of policies and procedures to all staff, regardless of position or status.

Lead a large, complex department with attention to team culture and satisfaction.
  • Build and maintain a strong team of HR Operations functional leaders and support staff through effective recruiting, training, coaching, motivating, team building, and succession planning;
  • Model and facilitate "best in class" culture practices and customer service standards aimed at delivering high-quality HR Operations support to all schools and Home Office teams/colleagues.
  • Manage the professional growth of direct reports to build a strong HR leadership "bench";
  • Review team members' work to provide ongoing, timely, relevant, and constructive feedback to HR operations functional leads and key cross-departmental leaders (e.g. staffing, school operations, performance management, employee relations).

Leverage resources and develop tools to guide the department's work and to support its goals and organizational priorities.
  • Provide strong financial stewardship of, and directly inform, the development of the HR Operations team budget (e.g. ensure return on investment analysis, participate actively in Talent budgeting processes, etc.);
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and other effectiveness indicators to monitor progress for all of HR Operations' major functions (compliance, operations of staff experience, and benefits administration);
  • Facilitate cross-functional cooperation, and identify and address strategic opportunities and challenges that support our HR and talent strategy, initiatives, and organizational priorities;
  • Guide the HR Operations department to develop its operational and work plans with clear and measurable goals that align with the larger HR and talent strategy, initiatives, and organizational priorities.

Develop and manage strong internal and external relationships to support the HR Operations department's work.
  • Collaborate closely with the Talent Leadership Team, Instructional Superintendents, and school site leaders to ensure cross-functional implementation of HR strategy;
  • Establish strong relationships and work effectively with key internal and external stakeholders and/or partners (e.g., vendors, school and Home Office leaders, local school boards, community-based organizations, etc.) to inform sound HR practices and strategy;
  • Represent Alliance on HR-related matters and develop relationships as needed to further Alliance's overall HR strategy, initiatives, and priorities.


THE IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE
  • Commitment to the Alliance's core beliefs and educational philosophy;
  • Successful leadership in HR, knowledge of state and federal labor laws and employment provisions;
  • Deep knowledge of urban public schools and school culture is a plus;
  • Ability to lead effectively in a multi-layered organization and build strong relationships with teachers, coaches, school leaders and other home office and school-based colleagues;
  • Strong conceptual, analytical, and organizational/systems thinking needed to interpret data, inform goals and strategy development, and lead implementation/execution;
  • Proven record of effective leadership, ability to navigate complex issues and drive organizational change;
  • Strong people management skills with a successful track record of leading teams to excellent outcomes;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey information to a variety of audiences (e.g., large groups, staff meetings, executive briefings, memos, etc.);
  • Ability to work well in emotionally charged, difficult situations involving confidential or sensitive matters;
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office and Google-based applications;
  • Entrepreneurial spirit to thrive in a fast-paced environment;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least five (5) years of relevant, progressive professional work experience in a public school district, public administration, charter school/education management organization, or university, with at least three (3) years of supervisory experience and verified experience in HR, employee or labor relations, supervision of schools, or equivalent experience,
  • A Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university in human resources, education, public administration or policy, or a related field.
  • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification OR SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) certification is preferred but not required.


WORK LOCATION

This position is a hybrid role which will include a combination of working from home, our network office, and travel to school sites. The successful candidate will be given a $400 work-from-home set-up allowance and receive a monthly stipend of $100.

  • Relocation: Individuals residing outside of the Greater Los Angeles area are eligible for a relocation bonus of $5,000 for individuals and $7,500 for new staff with families/partners.

  • Paid Leave: Regular full-time 12-month employees receive 8.5 weeks of vacation and paid time off. Full-time employees accrue 3 weeks of flexible paid time off per year and receive 27 other paid holidays as part of our network calendar.
  • Professional Development: At Alliance, we believe in supporting staff growth and development. Home Office staff are allocated $500 per year for professional development expenses.


COMPENSATION
$130,000.00 - $173,500.00
