Position Overview

The Vice President (VP) of Engineering is primarily responsible for leading engineering efforts (Web, Server, and Devices) for Cantaloupe's payment platform - a high-velocity platform which processes billions of dollars annually. This role involves managing and mentoring engineering teams, fostering innovation and technical excellence, and ensuring efficient collaboration with other departments. The VP of Engineering also plays a crucial role in strategic planning, setting technical direction, and staying abreast of industry trends and advancements to maintain the company's competitive edge. This position requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a strong vision for the future of technology within Cantaloupe.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the engineering team, including hiring, training, and mentoring engineers and engineering managers
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the engineering department, aligning with Cantaloupe's overall business objectives
  • Oversee the design, development, and delivery of products, ensuring they meet quality standards and customer needs
  • Collaborate with other departments (e.g. product management, sales, marketing, finance / accounting) to align engineering efforts with broader company goals.
  • Manage the engineering budget, ensuring resources are used efficiently and effectively.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve engineering processes and methodologies to enhance productivity and efficiency
  • Ensure the highest standards of quality in engineering practices and in the final products
  • Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure project success and stability
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including reporting on engineering progress, challenges, and achievements. Coordinate between clients, teams, other delivery partners to ensure successful and on-time delivery

Qualifications/Experience:
  • A bachelor's degree or greater in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 10 to 15 years of experience in the engineering field
  • Proven track record in engineering leadership roles
  • Strong technical background with software development, system architecture, and engineering best practices (for both modern server, backend, API, and hardware development)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor large, diverse, and distributed engineering teams
  • Experience in strategic planning, project estimation, and project delivery and execution
  • Ability to align engineering strategies with overall business objectives
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with other departments, stakeholders, and external partners
  • Ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Experience managing multiple large-scale projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management
  • Up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices
  • Alignment with the company's values and culture, and the ability to foster a positive and inclusive work environment
