Job Summary

The Vice Provost for Online Learning and Academic Innovation, directly accountable to the Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, will strategically guide the Division of Academic Innovation. This role prioritizes excellence in online programs, elevating engagement and success among students enrolled in online courses, while fostering robust partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders to drive institutional goals related to, for example, enrollment, degree completion, post-graduation success, and support for new academic programs.
In this pivotal position, the Vice Provost will architect and execute a transformative vision for online and hybrid education at UTA. This vision will include data-informed strategies to assess and meet students' needs during onboarding and throughout their journey. Acting as a crucial liaison among academic affairs/colleges/departments, university leadership, Faculty Senate, UT System, and other key stakeholders, this leader will ensure alignment with the university's strategic priorities.
The Vice Provost will also lead and execute academic innovations that cut across online and in-person instructional delivery. This will include, for example, developing a comprehensive learner record to help all UTA students capture and showcase learning from a variety of academic and co-curricular experiences, developing strategies that help faculty assess college-level learning that occurs outside the classroom and award appropriate academic credit for it, and facilitating career coaching and virtual internships to support post-graduation success.
The successful candidate will adeptly manage complex, expansive systems across multiple campuses, addressing the needs of undergraduate, graduate, professional, and non-degree programs. Additionally, the Vice Provost will engage collaboratively with academic departments and administrative units essential to promoting online learning success, including divisions focused on Student Success, the Graduate School, the Office of Information Technology, Marketing, Messaging and Engagement, Enrollment Management, and Student Affairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Expand and Enhance Online Offerings
  • As a strategic initiative, develop a comprehensive plan to elevate
  • UTA's online programs, specifically targeting high-demand and workforce-aligned areas.
  • Collaborate with esteemed faculty and key stakeholders to perform in-depth market analysis, pinpointing growth opportunities that align with institutional strengths.
  • Promote cutting-edge teaching methods and seamlessly integrate emerging technologies to ensure our offerings remain competitive and relevant.
  • Foster exemplary practices in instructional design to guarantee high-quality educational experiences that resonate with today's learners.

Drive Curriculum Innovation and Student-Centered Experience
  • Revolutionize classroom pedagogy and curricular frameworks by providing tailored training and robust support.
  • Position yourself as a champion of educational innovation within the higher education landscape, advocating for progressive pedagogical advances.
  • Cultivate a student-centered culture in online education, significantly improving engagement and enhancing support services.
  • Collaborate closely with Enrollment Management to bolster online student recruitment, retention, and satisfaction metrics.
  • Lead the development of a comprehensive learner record for UTA students to showcase diverse academic and co-curricular achievements.
  • Create strategies for faculty to evaluate and award academic credit for college-level learning outside of the classroom.
  • Facilitate career coaching and virtual internships to enhance post-graduation success.

Strengthen Partnerships and Optimize Resources
  • Forge and nurture synergistic relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to amplify the growth of online education.
  • Leverage strategic partnerships to create clear pathways for students to engage with valuable industry opportunities.
  • Assess and recalibrate the organizational structure dedicated to online education, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Conduct a rigorous assessment of staffing needs, securing the necessary resources for sustainable growth while establishing accountability frameworks and metrics for success.

Enhance Service Model and Continuous Improvement
  • Drive efficiencies across marketing, course design, delivery, and student support services to achieve economies of scale.
  • Lead innovative marketing strategies in partnership with admissions to ensure alignment with prospective students' evolving needs.
  • Spearhead continuous improvement initiatives grounded in data and learning analytics, enhancing program delivery and student experiences.
  • Provide expert guidance and unwavering support to faculty in the development of new online courses and programs, ensuring robust quality assurance at every stage.
  • Performs other duties as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Ten (10) years of progressive responsibility in a higher education environment, including five (5) years as an director or above.
  • Advanced expertise in online education, pedagogical innovation, and various emerging models of curriculum delivery.
  • Substantial experience in developing product offerings, strategic roadmaps, and new programs that drive organizational growth.


Preferred Qualifications
  • A Terminal Degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in a relevant field.
  • Extensive leadership experience in higher education administration (VP level or higher), including knowledge of academic programs, and experience in curriculum development, faculty and staff development, and evaluation.
