Water Information Specialist

This is to fill one full-time permanent position.

Our role

The Water Resources Branch works with diverse partners to protect water for the environment and people. We do so by building knowledge generated from our water monitoring networks, focused research, and by applying our learnings in the development of reports, guidance documents, and policies. Our professionals provide expertise to inform Yukon's regulatory processes and works closely with many partners during critical seasonal periods. We are a committed, collaborative and engaged group of professionals who take pride in water stewardship for all Yukoners.

Your role

The Water Information Specialist is a self-motivated and multi-talented individual excelling in data management, reporting, geospatial analysis, and mapping with a foundation in surface and groundwater quantity and quality. The incumbent maintains and improves the Branch's technical and scientific information systems (website, databases), conducts data analysis, reporting and visualizations, and uses data and information to inform decision-making, program planning and the creation of public-facing products. Essential Qualifications (what we're looking for in your resume)

  • Degree or diploma in water resources, environmental sciences, resource management, physical sciences or a related scientific or technical discipline.
  • Experience conducting data processing, management, and quality assurance and quality control of spatial, discrete, and continuous environmental datasets.
  • Experience conducting statistical analyses and/or modelling of environmental data using analytical tools such as R, Python or other similar languages.
  • Experience researching, synthesizing, and interpreting complex scientific information and reporting for a wide variety of audiences.
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), associated web-based platforms, and/or using R or Python to make maps or other spatial representations of data is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of SQL language and a good understanding of how to extract information from databases is considered an asset.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the Essential Qualifications will be considered.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability

Candidates should have and may be assessed on:
  • Communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively with others.
  • The ability to effectively manage time, priorities and a changing workload, under prescribed deadlines.
  • Problem solving, detailed-oriented, writing, research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to use a variety of computer applications (e.g. database interfaces, web content management software, image editing/manipulation software).
  • Knowledge of surface water and groundwater quantity and quality science and methods of data collection, management, analysis and interpretation.
  • Experience conducting field-based water quality/quantity monitoring.


Conditions of Employment: Valid Class 5 driver's license

Job Requirements: When required, fieldwork could occur in inclement weather conditions and in remote areas. Lifting heavy objects, travel via ATV, boat, snowmobiles, helicopters may be required.
