POSITION PURPOSE
The Web Developer will be responsible for providing complex and high-level web support to the Department of Medicine (DOM), our eleven divisions and additional clients within the School of Medicine (SOM). Reporting to the Manager of Web Services, the highly skilled Web Developer will use substantial organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills to maintain, design and develop new and existing sites and applications to help us grow and maintain our web framework services.
The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the School of Medicine with over 4500 staff, faculty, trainees and students and an annual budget of approximately $500,000,000 consisting of patient care revenue, sponsored research funds, endowments and gifts, state funds and affiliated hospital funding associated with the academic programs within the department. The department is made up of eleven subspecialties divisions: Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Cardiology; Gastroenterology; General Internal Medicine; Gerontology & Geriatric Medicine; Hematology-Oncology; Medical Genetics; Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition; Nephrology; Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine; and Rheumatology. These divisions occupy space at multiple sites including University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS), Bloodworks NW, Fred Hutch, and other locations in the Seattle area.
This position requires a high level of technical expertise, collaboration, as well as strong communication skills. The position makes highly complex and technical information understandable for diverse audiences. Individual initiative, good judgement, attention to detail and customer service skills are necessary for the responsibilities assigned. This position requires accuracy, efficiency, flexibility, creativity, and the ability to serve multiple stakeholders, while working within UW regulations.
The Department of Medicine web framework centralizes web services for the largest department at the University of Washington, easing the technical burden for organizational units, increasing usability for website visitors and content editors, connecting more effectively with target audiences and building a cohesive web presence.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Development (50%)
Design and develop web sites and web applications that meet the needs of our departmental units.
Develop and design new features.
Revise user interface and web site features based on user feedback.
Conduct thorough testing of user interfaces in multiple platforms to ensure all designs render correctly and systems function properly.
Validate the technical feasibility of website designs, while also applying best practices in designing and testing for accessibility.
Verify that our websites comply with current operational procedures and UW policies, including security, privacy and accessibility.
Provide routine website upgrades and maintenance.
Integrate internal and third-party web tools and applications as needed.
Maintain thorough documentation of all programs and procedures.
Contribute to web strategy discussions, offer solutions, and perform other tasks related to our dynamic and collaborative approach to web development.
Maintain awareness of technology advances and collaborate on applying new approaches.
User support (50%)
Using subject matter expertise, guide units on content generation and information architecture.
Respond to support requests from units and provide appropriate and timely solutions.
Troubleshoot and respond to errors and issues as they arise.
Provide training to content contributors on using our customized Drupal framework and following best practices for authoring web content.
Lead meetings and communicate with client units to determine design and functionality requirements.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, and a minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible web developer and/or lead programmer experience in an IT environment.
Demonstrated dedication to equity, diversity and inclusion.
Experience using HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, JSON on a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).
Excellent written and verbal communication and exceptional decision-making skills.
Outstanding interpersonal skills, including team ethic and relationship building.
Development experience with Drupal 8 and/or Drupal 10, including site administration, front-end and back-end development.
Demonstrated expertise in building web sites or web-based applications.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to respond appropriately to deadline pressures.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with any of the following; Git, SASS/LESS, RESTful web services.
Demonstrated expertise or education in organizing and writing content for the web, and ability to coach content editors.
Demonstrated expertise or education in user interface design, interaction design, and/or information design.
Experience with graphic design for the web, including familiarity with graphics software such as Photoshop and Illustrator.
Knowledge of IT accessibility issues for users with disabilities; familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices; experience testing for accessibility; and demonstrated ability to design content/applications with accessibility considerations.
Experience working in higher education or a large research institution.
