THE OPPORTUNITY

Western Forest Products have a new opportunity for a Wholesale Supply Purchaser in Vancouver, BC.

What You'll Do: Reporting to the Director, Custom Cut & Wholesale Supply, the 'Wholesale Supply Purchaser' is a key member of the Sales & Marketing team and will be tasked with executing on a successful purchase strategy for Western Forest Products' (WFP's) Wholesale Supply segment. This position will work directly with the sales group to ensure complete alignment to selected that maximizes margin and creates long-term success in the markets in which WFP sells to.

Who You Are: The successful incumbent will come with a strong attention to detail, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple deadlines and priorities. You come with 5+ years' experience in purchasing and/or sales within the lumber industry. Experience in Wholesale Supply, Sawmilling, Remanufacturing and knowledge of export documentation is considered an asset.

Work Environment: This role is to be performed out of our downtown office in Vancouver, B.C.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Purchasing
  • Responsible for purchasing a complete mix of Wholesale Supply product lines to the monthly and quarterly forecasts and directly communicating with select suppliers overseas. This will be coordinated with the Wholesale buyer for North America;
  • Developing regional and customer purchase plan annually and executing on monthly and quarterly targets to achieve the annual plan;
  • Developing programs of scale and size as well as strategic partnerships for partners in Asia;
  • Communicates accurate pricing, identifies competitor products and relative pricing, and utilizes that information to develop WFP's pricing strategy;
  • Works directly with the sales reps that are responsible for selling products purchased;
  • Ensures that unsold volumes ideally do not develop but managing those items that do develop on to daily lists; ensures that there is no aged unsold inventory on the ground;
  • Manages daily offer lists and updates pricing daily, weekly, and monthly or as required depending on the program or product line;
  • Understanding and utilizing sales negotiation techniques.

Market Analysis and Trade Shows
  • Regular, in-depth market analysis to be continually undertaken by monitoring key market indicators, researching publications and reports, and compiling and comparing pertinent data for their market segments and regions to develop forward strategies;
  • Maintains a keen awareness of their customers' needs and understand competitors' positions and alternative product lines in the marketplace, all to help better position WFP's sales and marketing strategy and efforts in each region of the segment;
  • Benchmarking pricing against competitor and substitute product lines;
  • Work closely with sales and customers to promote and educate on product lines.

Customer Service and Administration
  • Ensures excellent customer service is clearly defined for the segment with the Director, Custom Cut & Wholesale Supply;
  • Work closely with import vendors and our ESG Group to ensure compliance with external and internal regulations and polices;
  • Ensures open order and shipment status updates are provided to the sales group on an ongoing basis;
  • Works closely with the Wholesale Supply team to ensure that on-time shipping is tracked, monitored and that improvements are made to maintain the minimum expected levels of service;
  • Works with the Director, Custom Cut & Wholesale Supply, and operational divisions to ensure the minimum quality assurance standards are met. They will resolve claims with customers per the WFP policy on claims and claims management;
  • Understand products and their end uses and be able to communicate those both internally and externally;
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
  • Post-secondary degree in business, or related subject;
  • 5+ years of experience in a related purchasing and/or sales role, within the lumber industry;
  • Keen to learn product details, grading ticket is considered an asset.
