This position operates in the Survey Section of the Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau (IBEB), Center for Health Protection (CHP), Public Health Division (PHD) of the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH).
IBEB's mission is to protect and improve public health by providing the most complete and accurate information on injury and behavioral health trends affecting New Mexicans. We achieve this by maintaining high-quality public health surveillance systems, conducting data-driven analyses on injuries, violence, substance use, and mental health, and fostering collaborations at the local, state, and federal levels.
The Survey Section collects and analyzes population health surveillance data with a special focus on injury, behavioral health, chronic diseases, and social determinants of health, by managing the two most comprehensive population health surveillance data systems in New Mexico and leveraging other data sources. The Survey Section's main projects include:
- The New Mexico Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (NM BRFSS)
- The New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey (NM YRRS); also known as the New Mexico Youth Risk Behavior Survey (NM YRBS)
- Mental Health Surveillance and Epidemiology
Why does the job exist?
The successful application will oversee and manage the New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey (NM YRRS) and participate in other management duties in the Survey Section, under the supervision of the Section Manager.
NM-YRRS is a health behavior survey administered to nearly 40,000 New Mexico public middle school and high school students biennially. It is an integral part as well as an extension of the CDC Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance Survey (YRBSS). NM YRRS is the largest and most comprehensive youth health status and risk behaviors surveillance in New Mexico and the only available data source in New Mexico for youth behavioral health, mental health, risk behaviors, and protective factors, and the data have been widely used by communities, state agencies, and legislators.
This position is critical to the continued success of the NM YRRS, serving as the Program Director and the Epidemiologist Supervisor.
How does it get done?
The successful applicant will:
- Directly supervise at least two full-time positions.
- Collaborate and manage contractor(s).
- Manage grant applications and reporting.
- Manage funding and budget.
- Coordinate community outreach to increase survey participation.
- Perform epidemiological duties, including but not limited to leading the questionnaire development, designing sample frames, building datasets, data analysis, and data dissemination.
- Support data collection.
- Engage and collaborate with various stakeholders.
- Participate in the Section strategic planning and lead new initiatives.
- Occasional in-state traveling may be needed for community outreach.
Who are the customers?
The data are used by organizations and individuals including but not limited to NMDOH, NM Public Education Department, Children, Youth & Families Department, local public health agencies and organizations, and school districts, to better understand health behaviors and improve health for New Mexican youths.
Ideal Candidate
- Master's or Doctorate Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics
- Five years of work experience as an epidemiologist or public health statistician, using STATA, SAS, R, or SPSS.
- Four years of experience in program management in public health
- Three years of work experience related to community engagement and outreach, preferably on youth health.
- Two years of work experience with population survey data
- Two years of supervisory experience
- Two years of experience in grant application and management
- Two years of experience in financial management
Minimum Qualification
Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and two (2) years in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
This is an in-person position. The primary location for this position is Santa Fe, with easy access to the Rail Runner train system.
The chosen candidate is expected to work 40 hours (full-time) per week. The work schedule for this position is M-F 8 AM - 5 PM (including a one-hour unpaid meal break).
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive phone and personal computer usage. Some travel may be required.
