Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission ofthe Department of Pathology isto provide high quality, cost effective molecular pathology services in amanner that supports the patient care, education, and research missions of theVirginia Commonwealth University Health System and School of Medicine.

Chief Purpose of this position: The VCU School of Medicine is seekingcandidates for Chair of the Department of Pathology. This position is a senior-level, associateprofessor of professor faculty position. The Chair has a key leadership role in both the School of Medicine andVCU Health System. The position will lead the Department in all teaching,patient care, and research and will oversee the Department's diverse missions,faculty, and resources.
Duties & Responsibilities:
TeachingAdvance the education, research, andclinical missions of the academic health system
in all areas of Pathology incollaboration with the leadership of VCU. Facilitate and
support the training of the nextgeneration of clinicians who will further advance
Pathology practice and science. Championimprovements in education of medical and graduate
students, residents, and advancedpractice clinicians in the Department of Pathology.
Research
Support research among department facultyand collaborative relationships with faculty in other departments whereinterests (e.g. cancer) overlap with Pathology. Lead efforts to secure appropriate grant funding (including NIH) and philanthropyto support academic priorities.
Service
Provide the vision and leadership toachieve superior clinical programs for Pathology.
Work with clinical leadership to buildand grow areas of acknowledged clinical
excellence in Pathology. Serve on Schooland University committees. Commitment to
service within the community.
Administrative/Leadership
FinancialManagement: Prepare,oversee and implement the Pathology departmental
budget that encompasses all fundingsources and ensures compliance with grant,
legislative, and institutionalguidelines. Effectively work to manage available resources.
Encourage ethical and financialpractices within the Department of Pathology. Support
all institutional compliance activities.Recruit, hire and retain outstanding and diverse faculty.
Ensure an atmosphere of support anddevelopment. Encourage philanthropic gifts. Be a
highly visible collaborative leader insupporting VCU School of Medicine strategic
direction in partnership withDepartmental chairs, SOM academic affairs, and leadership.
PatientCare: Implement policies and systems to deliversuperior patient care for patients.
Be active and resolute in advancingpatient care, service
excellence, patient outcomes, quality,and safety and maximize day-to-day operational
performance of Department of Pathologyfaculty and clinical programs. Ensure
superior quality and safety for thepractice. Monitor and ensure patient access for all
services. Coordinate with CMO of VCUHSto ensure compliance with institutional and
regulatory requirements.
Leadership: Provide a strong and impassioned visionfor building excellence in all
aspects of the clinical and academicmission. Understand, appreciate, and prepare for
current and future trends in the fieldof Pathology. Work effectively across a complex
academic health system and academicgroup practice.
RelationshipBuilding: Build strongrelationships with others in an environment where the
other health sciences schools and thehospital are partners and where Pathology
faculty and staff collaborate with otherdepartments to ensure mutual achievement.
Mentorship: Mentor and develop trainees and juniorfaculty. Commit to and actively
participate in undergraduate andgraduate Pathology education. Identify, recruit and
retain the next generation of superiorfaculty members.

- Medicaldegree is required

- Eligibilityfor a Virginia medical license

- Previousexperience building or expanding a program, division, department, or groupwithin an organization
- Demonstratedmanagerial and business acumen
- Experiencein and demonstrated knowledge of the financial pressures facing academicmedical centers, health care delivery organizations, and academic departmentsof clinical excellence
- Experiencein a competitive clinical marketplace and in forging community relationships.
- Politicallyastute and able to work well with people at all levels - university, hospital,health system, community, faculty, and staff
