The Sr. R&D Engineer DRM Black Belt is responsible for applying and coaching Design, Reliability, Manufacturability (DRM) / Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodologies for the Diabetes Operational Units product innovation efforts.The individual selected for this role will be responsible for Diabetes-related products such as multiple daily injections (MDI) management, insulin pumps, glucose sensors, and related consumables and accessories. The position will support Diabetes OUs and Corporate DRM's strategy and objectives to achieve critical results and accelerate the rigor and speed of product development. The Senior R&D Engineer will support DRM implementation efforts across Medtronic Diabetess global locations from the Diabetes Headquarters in Northridge, CA.

The ideal candidate has a solid background in process design, development, and qualification, including Test Method Validation (TMV).This individual is experienced in analyzing data using statistical methods and software applications. This position will work across the organization, driving and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful execution of enterprise objectives.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned

  • Be a subject matter expert in DRM practices and statistical methods (DOE, Capability Analysis, GR&R, Reliability Modeling/Growth), and be proficient in using statistical software applications (Minitab, Reliasoft, Crystal Ball/DiscoverSim or equivalent) to derive insights and understand design margins, process capabilities and trade-offs.
  • Understanding the strategy and best practices in DRM/DFSS methods from the Corporate DRM Council and being up to date with industry practices while delivering and facilitating DRM/DFSS training for all levels of the organization (New Employees, Green Belts, Black Belts, and functional leaders).
  • Develop dashboards for DRM/DFSS metrics (training metrics, project metrics, assessment results, etc.) to provide visibility and monitor trending to the enterprise.
  • Coach DRM/DFSS Green Belt and Black Belt candidates towards successfully applying the methodologies and completing projects and certification.
  • Promote and demonstrate DRM/DFSS methods & tools utilization within product development teams across phases of the Product Development Process (PDP) and foment data-driven decisions.
  • Conduct and participate in DRM Assessments across global R&D locations to enable measurement of DRM/DFSS across the business and identify and implement gap plan strategies to ensure high maturity growth.
  • Recommend improvements to work processes and procedures, design guidelines, systems models, interfaces, systems architectures, and protocols within the Quality System.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Engineering or other science discipline and 4+ years New Product Development, Engineering or R&D experience

Masters of Science in Engineering or other science discipline and 2+ years New Product Development, Engineering or R&D experience


Nice to Have

  • Completion of RM projects or examples of successfully applying DRM in product or process development and improvement efforts.
  • Engineering degree in Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, OR applied statistics/mathematics.
  • Experience in product development in Medical Technology or other regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with FDA and ISO standards.
  • Experience developing, deploying, and improving DRM training material according to the organizations needs.
  • Experience in database development and metrics reporting (highly desired to have competency developing Power BI dashboards or similar)
  • Experience in the application of analytical/statistical methods for improvements in product performance
  • Experience and ability to train, lead, mentor, coach, and inspire individuals and teams to significantly impact the use of experience of our customers and the efficiency of our business.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to interface at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to work with others and accomplish goals as an interdependent team member.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects according to team prioritization.
  • Demonstrated ability as a creative problem solver and comfort in dealing with ambiguity.
  • Confidence in applying engineering experience to make pragmatic choices about system design, architecture, and implementation.
