About Our Job

The Denver Civil Service Commission is now accepting applications for future Lateral Denver Police Officer position for the Spring of 2024 academy.

SALARY: January 1, 2024, starting at PO2-$84,772.00 to PO1-$105,965.00 depending on experience.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Nature of the Work:
General responsibilities include promoting public safety by protecting lives and property, preventing crime, investigating criminal acts and motor vehicle crashes, enforcing criminal and traffic laws, and responding to incidents requiring police intervention or assistance. Police Officers are responsible for performing the essential functions of the job which include but are not limited to;
  • Representing the Denver Police Department, and the City and County of Denver to the community.


Police Officers patrol an assigned sector, precinct, or area, familiarizing themselves with businesses, public facilities, and the community.
  • The suppression of crime through collaborative relationships and community involvement.
  • The protection and preservation of life and property.
  • The investigation of criminal activity.
  • The apprehension and arrest of violators of criminal law and implement the traffic laws of the City and County of Denver.
  • Police Officers make detailed reports of all such occurrences; and respond to all police calls in their area, as disseminated by the police dispatcher.

About You

QUALIFICATIONS: To apply for a Lateral Police Officer position, you must meet the following requirements:
  • Possess a current Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification or state equivalent;
  • Not currently under Internal Affairs investigation for any reason;
  • Have a minimum of two years of law enforcement experience performing calls to service or street duty (Patrol Experience) while employed full-time at the time of application;


And ARE
  • Currently employed full-time as a state-certified law enforcement officer by a state, county, or municipal police or sheriff's department; OR
  • Laid-off or retired within the last twelve (12) months, state-certified law enforcement position; AND have been in good standing at the time of layoff or retirement.


Please note:

The following types of experience are NOT regarded as "law enforcement" experience for the purpose of Lateral to the Denver Police Department:

  • Deputy/Officer employed in a jail/prison setting;
  • "Full Service" employment in a university setting;
  • A volunteer reserve police officer;
  • A military police officer
  • A District Attorney investigator;
  • Employment on a part-time basis; or
  • Time spent in the training academy
