Responsibilities
Responsibilities for this position include managing a Responsibilities for this position include managing and supervising the operation of the NHMFL's liquid helium and nitrogen supply, recovery, and purification systems for highly sophisticated magnet systems. Coordinates and manages the operation of the LHe liquefiers and the cryogenic operation of the NHMFL's hybrid magnets. Maintain control of the cryogenic systems while users are running the hybrid magnets and ensure that the users are using safe methods of conducting research. Coordinates with internal and external users to schedule supplies of cryogens. Manage the maintenance and testing of hybrid magnet systems to ensure that they operate as efficiently and reliably as possible and with minimal unplanned downtime and research activities of users. Assists NHMFL facility engineers, scientists and managers in the evaluation, design and implementation of modifications and upgrades to the cryogenic systems. This position is a key player in the development of new programs for supplying cryogenic liquids, recovering gas and accounting for utilization by various users. Develops and implements operating and safety policies and procedures for cryogenic systems and equipment and gas recovery and purification systems subject to review by the NHMFL Design Review Committee. These systems produce the liquid helium that provides cooling for all the NHMFL's superconducting magnets, including the 45T hybrid magnet and the highest field MRI research in the world. Interprets and ensures compliance with federal and state laws concerning occupational health and safety related to assigned duties. Develops and implements testing procedures for these systems to ensure their proper operation and performance and monitors these tests over time to track system changes or degradation. Develops and directs programs for supplying cryogenic liquids, recovering gas, and accounting for utilization by various users. With the facilities engineering staff develops preventative maintenance programs and procedures for area of assigned responsibility. Trains new operators while developing the skills of existing operators.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma/equivalent and experience equal to six years. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field
- Must have commitment to serving facility user needs in a customer and safety-oriented research environment.
- Experience with cryogenic systems.
- Experience in project planning and implementation of a proactive maintenance program.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to interpret and ensure compliance with federal and state laws concerning occupational health and safety.
- Experience supervising employees.
