Description:
The Police Captain will perform complex work directing the operational activities of the Jefferson Police Department field operations. Work involves overseeing the day to day operations of the police department and assisting the Police Chief in developing and carrying out the mission and vision for the department. Provides supervision to a police watch or shift. Primary responsibilities include oversight of scheduling and deployment of personnel to ensure adequate coverage, as well as formal and ongoing training, development and evaluation of supervisor and officer performance.
Essential Functions:
* Meets with citizens groups as required. Serves on designated task forces.
* Makes and forwards suggestions.
* Organizes and implements policy needed to assure a safe and secure environment.
* Forecasts staffing needs and problems and initiates plans to meet needs based on statistical data.
* Develops a method of recruitment to ensure that the best personnel are hired.
* Provides for initial training of new staff, and ongoing training of existing staff.
* Oversight of the FTO program for all new hires on shift.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's Degree.
Master's Degree in Administration or related field preferred.
Knowledge of federal, state and local statues/ordinances.
Knowledge of principles, methods and techniques of maintaining effective protection and safety programs.
Experience:
Four (4) years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in specialized areas of law enforcement.
Lead, direct and control the daily issues of a diverse work force.

Essential Functions:
- Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
- Oversees completion of scheduling, work assignments and payroll entries; As well as reviews all reports by staff; prepares and reviews performance evaluations; and makes recommendations as appropriate.
- Supervises assigned personnel/subordinates on a watch or shift to ensure goals and objectives of the department are met. Provides direction and leadership. Commands the overall activity of the assigned function(s), reviews the work of personnel for proper and applicable law enforcement techniques, and monitors the results.
- Assures clear lines of communication between executive staff, command staff and line officers and that departmental policy, procedures and practices are clearly transmitted and understood.
- Familiar with crime stats and reports of areas surrounding the university and hospital facilities. Exercises independent judgement in all matters pertaining to the day to day operations including the application and enforcement of city laws and ordinances, and state statutes .
- Functions as a member of the agency's command staff providing input, suggestions, and recommendations.
