About the Team

VIZIO is looking for a Senior Staff Engineer (Database Reliability) for VIZIO's Software Engineering team. The successful candidate will play an important role in driving a critical overhaul in how we deploy and manage our database platforms, enabling a radical improvement in consistency, efficiency, and operability.

What You Will Do
Lead and be the champion for a rigorous, modern approach for deploying and managing data platform resources
Build the tooling foundation that will enable repeatable, low overhead creation and operation of databases, deployed and run at scale
Design and implement an IaC-based approach for managing stateful infrastructure components
Create pipelines that enable migration of infrastructure and code (DDL) without manual intervention to multiple environments and regions
Build and rebuild cloud databases in a zero-touch, zero-downtime fashion
Enable automated testing of deployed resources to validate basic health following infrastructure work
Design and implement mechanisms for secure, auditable database access for human users, service accounts, and privileged administrators
Automate routine maintenance tasks
Serve as a trusted resource for database technology selection and governance
Partner with application development counterparts to serve their needs while improving how they interact with database resources
Lead the design efforts for new database clusters
Be a steward for database health and platform modernization
Document architecture, processes, policies, and how-to guides
Architect for cost, and provide ongoing expertise into how to model, predict, monitor, and optimize our cloud spend
Assist efforts to run efficiently, either tuning databases or engaging support resources contracted to do this
Articulate project delivery plans, tasks, dependencies, status etc. to project managers and engineering leadership

About You

The ideal candidate is a multidiscliplinary software engineer with a deep expertise in cloud databases and hands on experience with modern tools and techniques for deploying and operating them at scale. You will bring many of the following experiences and skills to the table, and you will also bring a zeal for learning the rest:
10+ years of professional experience as a database administrator, deployment automator, or software engineer with expertise in data engineering solutions
Bachelor's Degree (BA, BS, or MS in Computer Science) or related field.
Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tenets and practices
Experience with declarative definition of infrastructure resources through tools such as terraform.
Automation of infrastructure deployment workflows using deployment pipelines built out on tools like Jenkins or GitHub Actions
Schema (DDL) deployment automation using tools such as Flyway or Liquibase
Unit test frameworks for verifying the integrity of database resources following deployments and upgrades
Architecting databases for continuous availability and disaster recovery
Knowledge of zero trust philosophy, designing for associated principles such as least privilege
Experience working with data sets subject to access controls and privacy regulation
Slow query monitoring and database optimization
Deep architectural understanding of common relational and NoSQL databases, plus large-scale data analytics platforms and caching technologies
Understanding of data pipelines, stream data processing, and data delivery architectures
Load and chaos testing
Experience in a direct-to-consumer business where maintenance and upgrade operations are handled in a zero-downtime manner

For Colorado-based employment: The minimum salary for this position is $156,000.00/year. In addition to base salary, the compensation package also includes eligibility for an annual bonus, as well as equity and a range of medical, dental, vision and other benefits.

For New York-based employment: The minimum salary for this position is $170,000.00/year. The maximum salary for this position $222,000.00/year. In addition to base salary, the compensation package also includes eligibility for an annual bonus, as well as equity and a range of medical, dental, vision and other benefits.

For Washington-based employment: The base salary range for this position is $170,000.00 to $222,000.00. Compensation may vary inside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the employee's total compensation package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, commissions, profit-sharing, or other stock compensation.
