POSITION DESCRIPTION
HGL is currently seeking a Geologist III to support environmental restoration projects for federal government clients including USEPA, USACE, NASA, USAF and various agencies across the United States and territories. Projects commonly involve investigation and remediation of sites with groundwater or soil impacted by emerging contaminants (PFAS), chlorinated solvents, and petroleum compounds as well as abandoned mine lands. Desired location is within the San Francisco Bay Area, CA region with travel required throughout the Western U.S.
The person hired for this position will work from home in the San Francisco Bay Area, travel to local projects in CA; and when needed, travel to other projects in the western U.S. (Work from home office equipment will be supplied by HGL)

Responsibilities/Duties
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
The person hired for this role will be responsible for:
- Managing and conducting environmental field investigations and remediation projects at hazardous waste/contaminated sites.
- Managing / leading field teams collecting field data and completing environmental sampling.
- Participating on field teams for collection of water, soil, soil vapor, surface water and sediment samples utilizing various sampling techniques.
- Performing / conducting field subcontractor oversight inclusive of drilling, monitoring well construction, waste transportation and disposal, and heavy equipment operation.
- Managing and contributing to the preparation of work plans and project deliverables (e.g., UFP-QAPPs, FSPs, RI/FS Reports, RD Reports, SSHP/HASPs, technical memoranda).
- Assisting with data entry, analysis, and interpretation of environmental data using statistical and visualization tools.
- Assisting with proposals, cost estimates, and subcontractor procurement.
- Assisting with remedial system operations and maintenance services.
- Ensuring field operations are conducted in a safe manner in accordance with project specific Site Safety and Health Plans / Health and Safety Plans.
- Potential for up to 40% travel within the U.S. as needed to support projects.
Required Skills
WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
The ideal candidate will need the following as a foundation for success in this role:
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Geophysics, Geological/Geotechnical Engineering or related field.
- Geologist-in-Training or Professional Geologist Certification (or capability to obtain designation within one year).
- Minimum of 4+ years of related work experience.
- Knowledge and experience of CERCLA, DoD, DOE, EPA, and/or RCRA projects.
- Previous experience with environmental investigations including various groundwater, soil, and soil vapor sampling methodologies.
- Experience with monitoring well drilling, logging, installation and sampling; developing boring logs and review/interpretation of geological boring logs.
- Prior experience contributing to the preparation of technical reports, memoranda, and work plans.
- Ability to work within a team environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and organization.
- Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, and other MS Office applications.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
WHAT YOU NEED TO STAND OUT
- Master's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Geophysics, Geological/Geotechnical Engineering or related field.
- Experience working on U.S. federal contracts.
- PFAS sampling and remediation experience.
- Experience as a Task Manager or Field Team Leader for environmental investigations.
