The Director of Quality Improvement Programs provides staff leadership to Society activities related to improving the quality of care provided to patients with hematologic diseases. The Director oversees additional staff focused in this area and serves as the primary liaison with the ASH Committee on Quality.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads the Quality Department:
    • Establishes goals, objectives, timelines, performance metrics, and expectations for the department.
    • Engages the department in a continuous quality improvement cycle.
    • Supervises the activities of and provides for the professional development of direct reports.
    • Selects and oversees the vendors and consultants employed by the department.
    • Ensures compliance with ASH policies and procedures.

Provides staff support to the Committee on Quality:
    • Facilitates the committee's work to position ASH as a leading medical organization within the quality realm.
    • Engages the committee in discussion about implementing additional quality activities, such as registries and programs to bolster health services research in hematology.
    • Works with the committee to develop a work plan for quality activities.
    • Organizes, with the committee chair, the agenda and background material for committee meetings.
    • Provides the committee relevant updates on developments in the quality sphere.
    • Serves as a principal point of contact for the committee members.
    • Organizes the committee into subcommittees and working group as needed to achieve its goals.
    • Understands the attributes committee members possess as well as gaps that might be filled from other sources.

Oversee the development and implementation of Quality Improvement (QI) activities, including:
  • ASH guidelines, at times in concert with other organizations, and oversees the process by which ASH endorses the guidelines developed by other organizations.
  • Guideline-related products to offer hematologists a toolbox for the treatment of various hematologic diseases:
  • Pocket guides
  • Mobile applications
  • Practice Improvement Modules
  • Webinars
  • Measures
  • Preparing written correspondence and reports to Society committees and to the membership at large
  • Representing ASH to national organizations involved in improving quality.
  • Overseeing Society volunteers and consultants in representing and planning Society involvement in the AMA Physicians' Consortium, AQA, National Quality Forum, and other quality-related organizations

Coordinates "quality" efforts across the Society's departments:
    • Coordinates (1) measure development and their inclusion in pay-for-performance systems, (2) responses to policy, legislative, and regulatory inquiries, (3) proactive policy positions - with Government Relations, Practice, and Scientific Affairs.
    • Coordinates marketing of and communication about quality programs as well as solicits feedback from the memberships about quality initiatives and resources - with Communications Department.
    • Coordinates development of educational resources (webinars, live meeting session topics) related to quality - with Education and Training Department.

Oversees the administration of the Quality Department:
  • Supervises preparation of reports to the ASH Executive Committee, ASH Officers, Subcommittee on Program Support, and other committees.
  • Supervises preparation of the annual departmental budget, participates in quarterly financial review meetings, and authorizes payments.
  • Coordinates, when necessary, with related public, patient, and professional organizations and coalitions.
  • Participates in ASH-sponsored meetings and events outside of normal working hours (evenings and/or weekends).
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED
  • Minimum of 10 years professional work experience working on health quality issues within a medical society or health care organization.
  • Direct experience in guideline development, development of guideline-derived products, and an understanding of the broader context of health care quality.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a evolving arena while contributing toward the development of a strategic vision.
  • Skills as a manager and leader, including the ability to organize and execute multiple high-quality programs simultaneously while meeting budgetary and timeline parameters.
  • Master's degree strongly preferred; bachelor's degree required.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Willingness and capacity to work within and foster a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, writing, active listening, and synthesizing information from diverse sources.
  • Detail-oriented, with excellent organizational and follow-through skills.
  • Basic computer word processing skills, including MS Office and Internet navigation required.
  • Some travel is required.

PHYSICAL REQUREMENTS
  • Requires ability to communicate effectively.
  • Requires ability to use computers, telephones and other office equipment.
  • May require periodic out-of-town travel.

ASH has a hybrid work environment, with core in-office days for all ASH staff on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and telework on Mondays and Fridays for eligible positions. The Society's headquarters is in Washington, DC, and is within walking distance of several Metro stations on the Blue/Orange/Silver and Red lines.
