General Statement of Responsibilities
Responsible for organizing and carrying out structured learning processes for students in biology, microbiology, and/or anatomy & physiology. Instructors participate in the full range of professional and college-related activities, including student advising, curriculum development, professional growth, departmental and college-wide meetings, committee activity, and community involvement.
Supervision Received
The dean, in consultation with the department chair, is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the vice-president of instruction. The dean confers with the department chair in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.
Examples of Duties - Essential Functions
Instructs students in a classroom, lab, learning center, or other setting as appropriate during the day, evening or weekends. Advises students on matters of program goals and course requirements, scheduling office hours as needed. Prepares, distributes, and utilizes instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate. Develops, communicates, and utilizes a student assessment process and instruments, which are related to the state objectives of the course. Participates as a team member in departmental meetings and planning activities. Participates in curriculum planning and development as needed. Serves as a member of college-wide standing committees, screening committees, and other related activities as assigned. Participates in the development of the quarterly class schedule and the annual departmental budget; initiates purchase requests, travel requests, and work orders as needed. Engages in regular professional growth activity based on the objectives established in an approved professional manner. Represents the program and the college to the community, business, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner. May participate in college recruitment and is active in student retention. Responsible for departmental equipment; participates in periodic inventory, and provides for the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate to the department. Perform teaching responsibilities on more than one campus if required. Performs other duties as assigned.
Screening Criteria
Education and Experience: A master's degree in biology, microbiology, anatomy and/or physiology, or a master's degree in a related field with 24 quarter hours of graduate credit or an MAEd or MAT in Science Education with a BS/BA in subject area is required. The qualified candidate will have at least one of the following: full-time, part-time, or graduate assistant lower division college science teaching experience or full-time secondary science teaching experience. Experience in curriculum development or preparation/evaluation of textbook and/or lab materials in the biological science. Ability to teach in three or more of the following areas: major's level general biology, non-major's general biology, microbiology, human anatomy and physiology. Ability to teach microbiology with at least two other subject areas is preferred.
Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.
Licenses: For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver's License and proof of an acceptable driving record are required. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver's license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).
Knowledge of: Sufficient knowledge of the subject area taught; computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, the Internet, multi-media presentations; curriculum development; the contemporary community colleges' mission, role in higher education, and student population; and sensitivity to a diverse student body and its needs; the role of accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act; and different pedagogical methods, including lecture, group activity, discussion, and individual instruction to accommodate a variety of learning styles. Physical Demands of Position: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility. Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis such as files, books, office and lab equipment, boxes, hazardous materials, etc. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, calculator, and standard office and lab equipment. May also be required to sit for long periods of time in meetings or traveling between counties.
Working conditions: Usual office and lab working conditions. The noise level in the work area is typical of most office and lab environments with potentially loud equipment, telephones, personal interruptions, and background noises. In the lab environment, potential exposure to body fluids, pathogens and hazardous materials.
