The Challenge

We are looking for an experienced Hydraulics Engineer to join our Eastern Division Support team that provides technical expertise, guidance, design, and quality assurance to manage storm water, riverine, and coastal impacts in and around roadways for the protection of the public, the environment, and NCDOT assets at every transportation project phase.

In this role, you will:
    • Work on our hydraulic engineering squad to develop and support hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) studies for NCDOT transportation facilities, including hydraulic planning reports, drainage investigations, final hydraulic designs, riverine modeling, bridge and culvert hydraulic reports, storm water management plans and floodplain compliance reports.
    • Perform H&H storm response and recovery, watershed modeling, advanced H&H modeling and design, and storm water control measure design.
    • Develop H&H best practices, digital CAD models, and storm water best management practices.
    • Attend and participate in field scoping, research and development, and training.
    • Perform field work requiring climbing steep terrains, through thick undergrowth, and working in bad weather conditions.


What You Bring
    • Knowledge of hydrologic/hydraulic design practices and riverine modeling related to transportation facilities.
    • Knowledge of FEMA, FHWA & AASHTO stormwater regulations and guidance related to hydraulic design.
    • Computer skills in Microsoft Office, Hydraulics modeling software, web-based GIS applications, MicroStation, and PDF viewers/editors.
    • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering principles to typical design situations and making sound recommendations/decisions using guidelines, performance metrics, and sound engineering judgement.
    • Experience conducting activities to meet goals while ensuring project quality and compliance.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work well in a group with some supervision.
    • Considerable knowledge and understanding of Hydraulics/Hydrology concepts, practices, and theories and the ability to use these in practice.
    • Ability to provide consultation to clients or others related to the specific program/project.
    • Ability to develop and/or create informational products, manage program/project plans, and develop and implement short-term strategies.


Notes
    • Occasional overnight travel will be required.
    • We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.


Education & Experience
    • Bachelors Degree in engineering, and
    • 3+ years of relevant experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
