TITLE: DIRECTOR, FOOD SERVICES
SALARY RANGE: 19 Management
JOB SUMMARY
Under direction, plan, organize and direct the activities of all Food Service programs in the district; work with and train personnel to function effectively in the Food Services Department.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education - Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience with additional education at a recognized university or trade school in cafeteria management, dietetics or a closely related field, or in business administration.
2. Experience - Two years experience in a role involving supervising staff in an institutional or other large food service department.
3. Knowledge of - Knowledge of governmental codes relating to purchasing principles and practices; the type of supplies, materials and equipment commonly used in a comparatively large school district; the sources of supplies commodity markets, marketing practices, commodity pricing methods and discounts, principles and practices of shipping and receiving; federal and state compliance related to food preparation, storage, and serving.
4. Ability to - Ability to learn and interpret laws, rules and regulations affecting school district food service purchasing operations; prepare and present oral and written reports; prepare clear specifications in accordance with established procedures and format; deal tactfully and effectively with school district officials and other staff, and representatives of manufacturing and commercial firms; supervise Food Service Supervisors, including selection of managers and other personnel; work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of the work, including school principals, teachers, administrators, students, vendors, cafeteria personnel and public organization representatives; coordinate hiring, terminating and evaluating staff with assistance from the Human Resources Department.
5. License required - Possess a valid California driver's license.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Review, monitor, evaluate, and approve purchase orders for supplies, materials, equipment and services to ensure that specification standards are observed.
2. Manage compliance with federal, state, local, and District procedures and requirements.
3. Assist in preparation of budgets and state and federal reports; prepare budget documents and analyze the budget vs. actual monthly expenditures.
4. Stay current with all legal requirements of school food service and implement necessary changes.
5. Design and approve monthly food service menu for nutritional standards, pricing, and preparation needs; approve new menu items periodically.
6. Coordinate the hiring of food service employees with Personnel; screen applicants and participate in the interview and selection process, as needed.
7. Meet with site principals to review needs and services; propose site modifications as necessary to meet codes; determine equipment needs at each site.
8. Evaluate Food Service Supervisor(s) for performance standards.
9. Create training programs for staff.
10. Evaluate food and labor costs by site on a monthly basis.
11. Review and approve special catering requests and billings.
12. Help families of students with special dietary needs.
13. Oversee nutrition education activities and work with wellness committee to coordinate district wellness goals.
14. Coordinate and attend wellness committee and staff safety monthly meetings.
15. Perform other duties as assigned.
A. PHYSICAL:
Stand and sit for extended periods of time. See and read printed matter with or without vision aids.
3. Hear and understand speech at normal levels.
4. Speak English so that others may understand at normal levels.
5. Stand, walk, stoop, twist, bend over, grasp, reach overhead, push, pull, and move, lift and/or carry 0 to 20 pounds to waist height.
B. MENTAL:
Able to concentrate on a single task for up to three (3) hours at a time. Able to learn quickly and adapt to a variety of machinery, instructions, and task methods. Able to meet deadlines in terms of work assignment schedules.
C. SOCIAL:
Interact daily in person with other members of the school staff, other district and county office personnel, vendors, and other business representatives; possess comfortable interpersonal skills and cooperative attitudes. Because of the time urgent nature of duties and because work product of position is interdependent with that of other staff, consistent attendance is required. Convey an understanding, patient attitude toward other students, parents, staff and members of community. Maintain the privacy of confidential information.
