What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you passionate about improving the quality of engineering software to address computing needs in our nation's most critical mission areas? Do you have a desire to address challenges posed by next generation computing architectures? We are seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, and resourceful Full Stack Software Engineer that is ready to challenge the status quo and drive improvements in process and quality methodologies in software engineering. This position will directly contribute to the success of Sandia's most critical mission areas and help grow the adoption of AI/ML best practices to solve real digital engineering problems. This is an opportunity to work directly with leadership, implement new technologies, and partner across the laboratory and Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) to ensure mission success.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Collaborate with NSE colleagues across application to hardware and cloud computing domains
  • Contribute to research and development in areas such as cloud native architectures, virtualization, enterprise cyber security, and business intelligence
  • Develop and test high quality software including web applications using modern technologies; write clean, efficient, and well-documented code; design and develop databases; detect, diagnose, and resolve software bugs; participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback
  • Incorporate DevSecOps best practices for continuous integration and delivery targeting low-side and high-side environments
  • Learn how to optimize software on cloud environments to inform architectural decisions as well as application migration decisions
  • Be responsible for planning, designing, implementing, testing, deploying, and maintaining robust systems and applications targeted for unclassified and classified networks utilized across the NSE
  • Work collaboratively with software engineers, digital engineers, technical leads, and customers to develop and design high quality software applications
  • Mentor staff in better software engineering practices

The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Salary Range

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or a related field plus 5 years' experience, or a Master's degree in a related field plus 1 year of experience; or equivalent (AS + 9 years or no degree + 13 years)
  • Experience in the following areas required:
    • 5+ years of experience in full stack software development
    • Experience with Java Spring Boot, or C#
    • Experience with front-end frameworks such as Angular, React, etc.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance


Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience applying AI/ML approaches & best practices to address mission needs
  • Experience working in cross NSE (Nuclear Security Enterprise) teams to make progress on strategic or technical initiatives
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment; excellent listening and communication skills
  • Critical thinking, synthesis and problem-solving; ability to deal with ambiguity and adapt to a fast-paced customer
  • Experience with Agile software engineering
  • Experience with containerization and continuous delivery approaches to software development and deployment in cloud-based environments
  • Experience working with OpensShift
  • Experience working on Agile teams
  • Experience applying DevSecOps Principles
  • Understanding of ITIL and IT Service management best practices
  • Exceptional customer service skills and experience managing customer interactions

The Science & Engineering Information Systems Organization is the partner of choice for innovative science and engineering information solutions for National Security missions. We Research, engineer, and support integrated information solution that enable diverse customers to solve complex problems and National security issues. Our organization can offer flexible work patterns with 9/80, 4/10 or 5/8 schedules available.
