Job Description

General Purpose:

Provide leadership, management, and direction for billing within the Consolidated Business Office (CBO) of Sparrow Health System. Ensure that billing operations of Sparrow Health System are in compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. Ensure that the mission, vision, and values of Sparrow Health System are met.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
  • Provide leadership for billing operations.
  • Monitor key performance indicators within span of control. Work with leadership and staff to develop and direct process improvement initiatives related to these KPI's.
  • Provide leadership in developing and improving associate engagement.
  • Develop an organizational plan for areas of responsibility. Determine staffing needs and standards of productivity, develop a highly effective team, and establish procedures, systems and appropriate job classifications. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local codes, regulations and ordinances.
  • Consult and advise department managers and supervisors on a regular basis to evaluate the competence of the work force, and make appropriate changes. Maintain open lines of communication and seek to maintain high associate morale in a professional, healthy, positive atmosphere and environment.
  • Establish policies and procedures to properly govern billing.
  • Performs interviewing, selecting, orienting and training of staff within span of control.
  • Develop an organizational plan for areas of responsibility. Provide leadership for Sparrow Health System billing.
  • Monitor key performance indicators within the Manager's span of control. Work with the billing leadership team to develop and direct process improvement initiatives related to these KPI's.
  • Provide leadership in developing and improving associate engagement.
  • Consult and advise department managers and supervisors on a regular basis; evaluate the competence of the work force, and make appropriate changes; maintain open lines of communication; seek to maintain high associate morale in a professional, healthy, positive atmosphere and environment.
  • Work closely with other Sparrow leaders, and affiliates, to develop accurate, efficient, and maximized charging and billing practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all laws, rules, and regulations and work with regulatory agencies governing healthcare reimbursement by continually monitoring the financial implications and status of regulations and audits accordingly.
  • Represent the Health System, as assigned by the Director, in its relationship with other health agencies, organizations and groups, government agencies and third party payors at the state, national, and local level.
  • Maintain professional affiliations and enhance professional growth and development by keeping abreast of the latest trends in healthcare policy, administration, delivery and financing.
  • Identifies the need for revision of existing services or development of new services in response to changing customer needs and expectations.
  • Reviews and recommends for write-off of A/R balances, adjustments for non-contractual reasons.


Job Requirements

General Requirements
Membership in HFMA, MPAA, or related professional organization

Work Experience
Experience in a large organization with billing - preferred

Education
Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or related field and a minimum of three (3) years experience in billing management; OR Associates Degree in Business or related field and a minimum five (5) years experience in billing management; OR High school diploma/GED and minimum eight (8) years experience in billing management

Specialized Knowledge and Skills
Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, direct and lead. Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and listening)..
