As Fleet Public Health Officer, you will oversee quality shipboard public health practices through operational support, compliance audits, policy and procedure development and implementation, while supporting the recruitment and performance evaluation of shipboard Public Health Officers. In addition, you will support shipboard Public Health Officers in the prevention and control of communicable diseases, outbreaks and environmental health risks.
Key Responsibilities
- The Fleet Public Health Officer is responsible for ensuring high-quality shipboard public health practices through operational support, compliance audits, policy and procedure development, and HR support. They assist in preventing and controlling communicable diseases, outbreaks, and environmental health risks. The officer coordinates with their Shoreside manager and shipboard Public Health Officers (PHO) to address operational issues and provide training for new and existing officers.
- The Fleet Public Health Officer responds to public health emergencies, provides recommendations for improvements, and facilitates consistent application of policies and procedures through audits, training, feedback, and ongoing operational evaluation. They also train and develop the technical and operational skills of new and existing Public Heath Officers, contribute to other initiatives, conduct shipboard public health operational reviews and audits, and promote a positive shipboard public health culture.
- The Fleet Public Health Officer maintains awareness of relevant local, national, and international public health laws, standards, and regulations, and actively identifies ship-specific public health risks and needs. They participate in ongoing monitoring and compliance with financial plans, contribute to financial targets, and develop and support a high-performing team of shipboard Public Health Officers. They also assist in scheduling PHOs, planning, anticipating additional support requirements, establishing contingency plans, and responding to operational needs.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- A Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, or Biological Sciences, or an equivalent field, is required.
- A minimum of three years of professional experience in the field of environmental health or public health is also necessary.
- The ideal candidate will possess the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, while prioritizing workloads. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with various teams are also highly desirable. Analytical and logistics skills are preferred. Fluency in English, both verbal and written, is essential.
