Position Information
New Hanover County is seeking a dynamic Sustainability Manager to lead and integrate sustainability goals into long-term strategic plans. The successful candidate will plan, implement, and oversee efforts to enhance sustainability and resiliency through policies, programs, education, and outreach initiatives. Reporting to an Assistant County Manager and serving as a point of contact for sustainability issues within the County Manager's Office, this additional role to the organization will manage the overall direction and coordination of sustainability and resiliency activities.
Key responsibilities include conducting climate risk assessments, coordinating the county's hazard mitigation plans, and developing resilience plans and processes for natural disasters. The manager will educate stakeholders on best practices and participate in policy discussions, including assisting in budget recommendations. They will also conduct sustainability audits, identify opportunities, and implement strategies for waste minimization, climate change adaptation, green procurement, clean water access, and energy efficiency.
As the county's liaison and representative on committees and community initiatives related to sustainability and resiliency efforts, the manager will be the subject matter expert on such matters for the county. The manager will also work collaboratively with senior leaders and various departments to ensure an organization-wide approach to sustainability, to include identifying best practices for green infrastructure, urban agriculture, low-impact development, and green spaces. Additional duties include gathering and analyzing data, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, procuring resources, and researching grant opportunities. The role requires regular attendance, participation in emergency situations, and adaptability to other duties as needed. Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
Knowledge, skills, education, training, and experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the functions of the role and successfully perform the essential duties, usually associated with 8 years of combined education and experience in sustainability programming, resource conservation, or environmental protection; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Knowledge of sustainability and resilience principles and practices including coastal community related issues, energy and clean water policies, waste management solutions, green infrastructure and building practices and other related areas; skilled in preparing analytical and technical reports, planning and coordinating and managing projects;; understanding of applicable local, state, and federal statutes governing resource conservation and sustainability; understanding of and local proven experience in effective communications principles; knowledge of local, state, and federal programs as they relate to county operations; and ability to develop collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Skilled in using a computer and related software programs; researching effective communication methods and techniques; working with a diverse group of people and stakeholders, communicating ideas effectively orally and in writing; critical thinking, public speaking and facilitating group discussions; maintaining effective working relationships; and providing excellent customer service.

The current salary range for this position is $68,495.00 - $116,441.00 Annually
The hiring range for this position is $68,,495- $92,468.00 plus a competitive benefits package. Salary is negotiable within the hiring range, depending on qualifications.
