About the School System
Edenton-Chowan Public Schools (ECPS) serves approximately 1,800 students from prekindergarten
through twelfth grade. The school system operates 4 schools, including an
elementary school for grades Pre-K through second, an elementary school for grades three
through five, a middle school, and a traditional high school. ECPS is one of the top school systems
in North Carolina for its percentage of teachers with National Board Certification, and the district
has received both state and national recognition for its programs. The school system enjoys
strong community support and is governed by a 7-member nonpartisan board of education
elected to serve staggered 4-year terms.
About the Community
Chowan County is located in northeastern North Carolina, approximately a one and one-half hour
drive from the Tidewater Virginia area, The Outer Banks and Greenville, North Carolina. It is the
smallest county by geographical size though not by population. According to the 2023 US census
estimates, the population of Chowan County is 13,891. Chowan County offers an abundance of
historic landmarks, architecture, recreational activities, agricultural and aquatic resources.
Edenton, the county seat, has been called not only "The South's prettiest town" by Forbes but
was also recently rated by Travel+Leisure as one of the 20 most beautiful towns in the entire
United States.
Who Should Apply
Candidates must meet the legal requirements to be licensed as a superintendent in North Carolina
or otherwise be qualified and eligible to serve under State Board of Education policy. In addition,
the selected candidate will be required to live in Chowan County.
Central office and building-level experience is preferred. A doctorate degree or progress toward
a doctorate degree is preferred but not required.
