The Financial Litigation Unit (FLU) at the USAO litigates debt collection issues and enforces collection of criminal and civil debts owed to the United States or to victims of federal crime. Civil recoveries are generally from delinquent student loans and small business loans, environmental penalties, bankruptcy judgments, and civil fraud prosecutions and penalties. Criminal recoveries are for special assessments, restitution which is returned to crime victims, fines and penalties.

Responsibilities:

  • In consultation with the Assistant U.S. Attorney, independently conducts asset investigations to recover debts imposed in cases handled by the U.S. Attorney's Office District of NV. The subjects of the investigation may be individuals or corporations.
  • Investigations are conducted in conjunction with federal and/or state agencies which engage in the disbursement of direct loans, guaranteed loans, financial contracts, grant programs where financial responsibility is a factor, and general administrative debts.
  • Reviews and analyzes data received from debtors and third parties, utilizing electronic databases to identify documents and other physical evidence.
  • Examines financial records, databases, and other sources of information to identify assets that may be liquidated to satisfy the outstanding debts.
  • Prepares interim and final reports on availability of assets and progress of investigations for use by AUSAs and supervisory attorneys.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred. Additional experience can be substituted for degree requirements.
  • Formalized training and certification within a specific expertise/investigative field preferred.
  • 10+ Years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex financial investigations.
  • Experience with Lexis/Nexis, Accurint, AutotrackXP, Westlaw, Credit Bureau Reports or Pacer preferred.
  • Must have above average oral communication skills
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate
