Position Summary:
The Road Design Leader is responsible for directing a team of engineers and technicians in developing or coordinating the development of plans for transportation system improvement. They have extensive knowledge and expertise in addressing issues such as hydraulics, hydrology, geometric design, development and documentation of standard drawings, training, value engineering, intelligent transportation systems applications, highway permits, right-of-way determinations, public involvement, barrier and roadside design issues, consultant coordination, CADD, roundabout design, environmental documentation, and project management.

Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
The Road Design Leader is responsible for directing a team of engineers and technicians in developing or coordinating the development of plans for transportation system improvement. They have extensive knowledge and expertise in addressing issues such as hydraulics, hydrology, geometric design, development and documentation of standard drawings, training, value engineering, intelligent transportation systems applications, highway permits, right-of-way determinations, public involvement, barrier and roadside design issues, consultant coordination, CADD, roundabout design, environmental documentation, and project management.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Administers policies and procedures to be followed by squad personnel and consulting engineering firms, in the study of project locations, completion of project design, and other related assignments.
- Represents the Bureau in design related meetings, field checks, and public meetings.
- Serves as the engineer who administers the project during the Preliminary Engineering process.
- Provides leadership in coordinating with other Bureaus and agencies during the design process.
- Reviews highway permit applications and makes recommendations regarding approval or denial of the permit.
- Serves as the quality control engineer for the bureau.
- Guides squad leader in planning actions and organizing the efforts of the squad in order to complete projects on schedule.
- Assists and mentors the squad leader in addressing new and difficult assignments. Anticipates project variations and delays and addresses resource issues.
- Uses creativity, foresight, and seasoned engineering judgement in anticipating and solving complex engineering problems and organizing programs and projects.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Six years of experience in Engineering.
- Valid Driver's License at time of appointment.
- Graduate from an ABET (Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology) accredited engineering school.
- Professional Engineering License recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
- Civil Engineering
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of the policies, design criteria, and procedures used in developing highway plans.
- Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate required in accordance with Executive Order 2004-03.
