Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Retention

Purpose:

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Development, the Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Retention oversees a full slate of services to promote student success and retention. This position will focus on promoting a holistic approach to student success through administrative outreach/coordination for student concern and wellbeing. The position is a resource, advocate, and liaison for a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, parents, families, and community partners to support and contribute to student success.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and administrative oversight for student success and engagement, first-year experience, orientation, retention activities, and the development of co-curricular programming that enhances student life and belonging.
  • Provide campus-level coordination for all partners involved in the development and implementation of programs related to the FYE including, but not limited to, First-Year Preceptorial, the Residential Curriculum, Living Learning Communities, New Student Orientation, and Summer Bridge Programs.
  • Provide leadership for key offices in Student Development including intercultural life, spiritual life, international student services, and community service.
  • Lead initiatives to improve student retention through coordinated response to early alerts, targeted interventions to at-risk populations, and training staff/faculty in retention best practices.
  • Serve as a resource and provide consultation, referral, and follow-up for students needing additional support in a variety of wellness-related areas of focus, including social connectedness, academic success, mental health, physical wellbeing, and financial wellbeing, among others.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments within the Division of Student Development and across the College to identify and align systems of support, opportunities, services and referrals for student success.
  • Serve as primary liaison to selected student populations to assist with building relationships and processes to ensure awareness of available resources.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality with regard to student health, counseling and educational records.
  • Engage on division and College committees related to retention support for students, including the Student Success Committee and others.
  • Serve as instructor/co-instructor for IDIS 130, Knox College's student leadership course.
  • Participate in an on-call capacity as a member of the duty team.
  • Lead and participate in College Orientation activities. This includes, but is not limited to, planning the Orientation schedule, assisting in hiring Orientation Leaders, and developing an assessment plan for Orientation activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.


Qualifications
  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs or a related field
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs with an emphasis on student success
  • Proficient in Maxient and other student-facing software systems
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity, antiracism, and the ability to foster inclusive communities
  • A desire to be highly visible, maintain strong connections and work successfully with students, faculty, staff, families and external constituents
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the small, residential liberal arts college environment
