The AFRL Munitions Directorate seeks to hire a multidisciplinary Mid-Level DR-0801/0854/0855/1520/1550-02, in the Algorithm Development & Nature Inspired Systems Section (RWTCA) Eglin AFB in Valparaiso, Florida. Experience with engineering and managing technical efforts related to neuroscience, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics and/or related fields. Combination of experience of the following with a technical background: leading science and technology, research and development, and working in an R&D laboratory, leading basic to advanced technology development and/or a technical background in one or more of the following areas: artificial neural networks using spike-based / neuromorphic processors and other biologically-inspired computing architectures, biologically-inspired sensors, event-based cameras, algorithm development, hardware and/or software integration for neuromorphic computing systems, computer science and engineering, mathematics, and technical program management.

Position duties include but are not limited to:
  • Performs professional engineering/research and scientific work involving the design and development of neuromorphic processing systems, incorporating hardware and/or software elements to create computer-based systems that mimic the structure and function of biological processing systems, such as the brain.
  • Conducts research and development activities to advance the field of neuromorphic processing, including but not limited to: the design and testing of artificial neural networks, especially using spike-based / neuromorphic processors and other biologically-inspired computing architectures; the use of biologically-inspired sensors, such as event-based cameras, and combining such sensing and processing into usable systems; and developing algorithms and other software for such systems.
  • Performs analysis and uses systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable approaches to manage projects.
  • Determines how best to accomplish neuromorphic processing technology objectives, develops and evaluates alternatives, designs and conducts experiments, analyzes and interpret results, publishes papers and technical reports, delivers presentations of results, and monitors in-house activities.
  • Prepares contractual documents, technical reports, and/or evaluate technical proposals if needed.
  • Develops and maintains collaborations within and outside of AFRL. Maintains a technical and programmatic cognizance of outside technological and research projects and programs; reports status to peers and senior technical leaders as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify at the DR-2 GS-12/13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which must include the following experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
  • Individuals must have one year of specialized experience which includes experience with engineering and managing technical efforts related to neuroscience, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics and/or related fields.   • Must have at least one year of specialized related experience at the DR/DO-01/GS-11 or equivalent grade level.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance. This position is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level/Tier 1 (Practitioner) Non-Critical certification in Engineering & Technical Management (N).

Desired Qualifications

Experience with the technical areas below:
  • Master's or Doctoral Degree is highly desired in neuroscience, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, mathematics, and/or physics. The ideal candidate would have their thesis or dissertation research pertaining to design and development of neuromorphic processing systems and related technology areas.
  • Demonstrated ability leading or guiding cross-functional, multi-disciplinary teams to resolve technical challenges related to neuromorphic computing.
  • Familiarity with biologically inspired computing models, such as spiking neural networks, and the ability to apply this knowledge to the design and implementation of neuromorphic computing systems.
  • Experience with neuromorphic algorithms, such as spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) and other unsupervised learning rules.
  • Experience using biologically-inspired sensors, such as event-based cameras, and combining sensing and processing into functional systems.
  • Experience with neurophysiology experiments, including the ability to design and conduct experiments to study the neural basis of behavior.
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in neuromorphic computing, such as Python, C++, or MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of neural network architectures and algorithms.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience with facilitating and enabling internal/external collaboration and partnerships for technology development.
  • Experience critically thinking about strategic and/or leadership guidance to plan technology development to remain relevant with current technology.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people, build consensus, seek alternative viewpoints from others, and identify and resolve conflicts/problems with the workforce.
