Job Summary
The HIM Director plans, organizes, and oversees the day-to-day operations of the HIM Department including analysis/release of information, correspondence, coding and maintaining health information for the hospital. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the processing of all outpatient and inpatient records for timely and accurate chart completion and ensuring documentation guidelines and rules for correct coding are met. Maintains statistical data and provides reports as required for Administration. Coordinates HIM functions with clinical operations departments within the hospital to enhance physician-hospital relationship. Works with the Medical Staff in matters of chart completion and documentation to ensure coding accuracy, optimal reimbursement and compliance with licensing, accreditation and legal requirements. Serves as the hospital's HIPAA Privacy Officer.

Position Requirements
Formal Education/Training:
1. Education: Bachelor's Degree in related field
2. Licensure Registry or Certification: RHIT or RHIA

Personal Job-Related Skills:
Reach deadlines, coach HIM staff, interact with WGH staff and Medical Staff in a positive coaching manner.

Experience:
Minimum of 3 years' experience in a supervisory position in a Health Management Department.

Health Information Management

Physical and Mental Requirements:
Duties of the position require intermittent walking, sitting, and standing. The ability to meet deadlines and remain calm in a stressful environment.

Duties and Responsibilities
Medical Record Retrieval: Provides authorized individuals with timely access to patient information without compromising the security of the patient records.

Chart Analysis:Reviews patient records for completeness. Staff ensures the presence of provider signatures/initials and the required documentation elements.

Transition: Has demonstrated the ability to accept the continual changes in the Medical Records Department.

Job Associated Equipment: Provides knowledge, care, and maintenance of equipment essential for job functions. Staff will demonstrate working knowledge of the electronic health record and spreadsheet applications in order to comply with requirements.

Failure of Systems: Provides knowledge and understanding of Medical Record's role in case of disaster, power failure, or any other event affecting the availability of the patient's Medical Record.

Other Significant Requirements:
1. Required to keep an updated licensure/certification of RHIA or RHIT.

2. Maintain a thorough knowledge of state, federal and regulatory agency standards, laws, rules and regulations with application to health information management.

3. Keep up to date of comprehensive knowledge of contemporary health information practices in a healthcare setting.

4. Work with the Business Office, Case Management, Coders, and other departments as needed to increase revenue, reduce denials, and decrease hospital AR days through best practice.

5. Implement and provide statistical data as required and requested by administration.

6. Oversight of all HIM staff to provide services which are quality driven.
