General Statement of Duties

Assigned to a County laboratory with primary responsibilities for accurately performing the full range of sampling, testing, tracking, analysis, quality control, and peer review, equipment calibration and maintenance duties; identifying equipment, sampling and testing issues; accurately identifying and troubleshooting issues and taking appropriate corrective measures; adhering to strict prescribed guidelines, processes, permit requirements, and other State and Federal mandates and regulations; training and assisting other Lab and County staff; and maintaining strict chain-of-custody; does related work as required.

Essential Duties

  • Extensive working knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing protocols
  • Proper sample collection and preservation skills
  • Advanced working knowledge of various wastewater and drinking water analyses (i.e. CBOD, BOD, NH3, TKN, TP, NOX, TSS, TS, TVS, Metals, Mercury, Fecal, E. coli, Presence/Absence, etc.)
  • Advanced working knowledge of aseptic technique
  • Ability to accurately and safely calibrate, use and maintain all equipment used for analyses performed in the laboratory
  • Follow all safety protocols and use all required personal protective equipment
  • Understand various holding time and sampling technique requirements
  • Excellent attention to detail and organization skills with the demonstrated ability to plan and execute work accurately
  • Sound judgment, critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to appropriately troubleshoot, analyze and resolve a wide variety of questions and issues with minimal guidance
  • Thorough working knowledge of relevant safety rules/regulations and accident-prevention practices
  • Manual dexterity, visual and hearing acuity sufficient to enable accurate testing, analysis, data collection and reporting
  • Ability to work safely in laboratory conditions handling various standards and reagents that could potentially be hazardous
  • Sound interpersonal skills, including good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse audiences of internal and external personnel, including regulators and other stakeholders and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to train other lab staff on various analyses
  • Sound computer skills with the ability to use typical business software, proprietary software and applications to complete assigned tasks
  • Sound math skills necessary to perform accurate calculations
  • Will be required to work a rotating on-call schedule
  • Possibly be required to work rotating weekend schedules


Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a four (4) year degree in biology, chemistry or other relevant field and six (6) years of previous relevant work experience; OR, any equivalent combination of directly related experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Additional Information

Job is located to the Henrico County Water Reclamation Facility located at 9101 WRVA Road in Varina.

This position is part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offer career development opportunities within the position based on the performance, qualifications, and experience of the incumbent. This position may be filled at any level (I, II, III or Senior) commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and the needs of the department at the time of hire.

Hiring ranges and minimum qualifications are as follows:

Laboratory Analyst I $55,005.67 - $101,185.51

Four (4) year degree in biology, chemistry, or other relevant field; and previous relevant work experience preferred; OR, any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Laboratory Analyst II $57,646.08 - $106,042.68

Four (4) year degree in biology, chemistry, or other relevant field; and two (2) years of previous relevant work experience required; OR, any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Laboratory Analyst III $60,413.25 - $111,133.01

Four (4) year degree in biology, chemistry, or other relevant field; and four (4) years of previous relevant work experience required; OR, any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Laboratory Analyst Senior $63,313.24 - $116,467.69

A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.

A valid driver's license to perform assigned duties at various locations Countywide is required.
