NUMBER OF POSITIONS REPORTING TO THIS POSITION: None

LOCATION: Remote with a preference for Sacramento, Mendocino, or Sonoma Counties, California. Travel to Mendocino and Sonoma Counties required periodically.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Forester: Inventory & Analysis will support the timber harvesting and forest carbon programs through mapping, data collection, analysis, and maintenance of geospatial information and forest inventories.

The Forester will provide analytical support for sustainable forest management, restoration projects, and land acquisition as needed. This position is responsible for the North Coast's geographic data and will support forest management activities through forest inventories. The Inventory Forester will work in close coordination with our national GIS Team and the local North Coast staff to ensure best practices for long term data retention and documentation.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Maintain long term geospatial data stewardship (restoration projects, timber harvest plans and associated information, forest inventories, etc) using ESRI tools and applications.
  • Conduct growth and yield modeling to support forest carbon and sustained yield planning.
  • Provide cartography for the North Coast program (public tours, presentations, grants, fire books, sustainable forestry certificates (FSC/SFI)) and timber harvest plan support.
  • Have knowledge of active forest management in the redwood region of California
  • Have knowledge of forest carbon projects within the California Compliance Market, ability to learn to assist the program with annual reporting and verifications.
  • Work with Continuous Forest Inventories for forest management (sustained yield) and forest carbon including on-the-ground data collection and check cruising, data quality assurance/quality control, long term storage and management of the data.
  • Calculate annual impact metrics for the program, including reporting to partners
  • As needed, support analysis of potential forestland acquisitions and/or out sales
  • Design specific maps to display various forest values including carbon, hydrology, ecological communities, etc.
  • Ensure integrity of both data collection and management relating to conservation projects and project statistics
  • Review field data and other spatial datasets for quality assurance and quality control.
  • Acts as a liaison to partner organizations and government agencies for GIS needs


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science in Forestry, Natural Resources, Geography, related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience with forest management, THP preparation and/or logging supervision.
  • Minimum of one-year practical geospatial experience; excellent cartographic skills
  • Extensive experience in map generation and data visualization in ESRI ArcGIS/ArcPro
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access)
  • Experience with growth and yield modeling, preferably FORSEE or FVS
  • Knowledge of forest inventory; preferably with field experience installing and measuring fixed and variable radius plots in steep terrain
  • Self-motivated and independent; able to work well with a team and willing to take initiative.
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent communication, judgement and problem-solving skills


PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Registered professional forester or qualified experience to take the exam within 2 years of hiring.
  • Experience using Python or R or other appropriate programming environments.
  • Experience developing and maintaining multi-user geodatabases.
  • Strong background of conservation applications of geospatial analysis
  • Experience developing Improved Forest Management carbon projects.
  • Experience with forest financial planning and modeling.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work is performed in both an office setting and in outdoor settings in all weather conditions.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Some lifting and carrying will be necessary - up to 20 pounds.
  • Work is performed in both office and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  • Estimated travel varies depending on the destination, but up to three hours of driving per day may be required.
  • Overnight travel will be infrequent (less than once per month).


COMPENSATION and BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $95,000, and the position is eligible for opportunities to earn performance-based bonus compensation. The Fund offers a highly competitive package of benefits including employer contributions for health care, paid holidays, vacation and personal/sick leave, retirement plan and more. Please note: Salary range provided is an estimate and will be evaluated on an individual basis, taking into consideration the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and education. The final salary offer will be determined accordingly.
