Position Overview: The Director of Special Education will lead the development, implementation, and oversight of special education programs and services within the 7 public school districts in Montague County. This role involves ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, advocating for students with special needs, and collaborating with educators, parents, and community partners to support the academic and social-emotional development of all students receiving special education services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Program Leadership and Management:
    • Oversee the planning, development, and evaluation of special education programs and services across the 7 public school districts in Montague County.
    • Ensure that all special education programs are compliant with federal and state regulations, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
    • Develop and manage the special education budget, ensuring effective allocation of resources.
  • Staff Supervision and Development:
    • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate special education staff, including teachers and related service providers.
    • Provide ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance staff skills and knowledge in special education practices.
  • Student Services and Support:
    • Oversee the development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
    • Ensure appropriate assessment, placement, and services for students with special needs.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Collaborate with school principals, teachers, parents, and community partners to promote inclusive practices and support student success.
    • Serve as a liaison between the district and state or federal agencies, ensuring compliance with all reporting requirements.
    • Facilitate communication between schools, families, and external agencies regarding special education services and programs.
  • Policy Development and Compliance:
    • Develop, implement, and update policies and procedures related to special education.
    • Ensure that the district's special education practices are aligned with current laws, regulations, and best practices.
    • Conduct regular audits and reviews of special education programs to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Qualifications:
    • Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Administration, or a related field.
    • In-depth knowledge of federal and state special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
    • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including educators, parents, and community members.
    • Proficiency in data analysis and using technology to manage special education programs.
