Reports To: Superintendent of Schools

Job Goal: The primary role of the Principal is to provide leadership and administration that will motivate instructional and support personnel to strive for superior performance so as to provide the best possible opportunities for student growth and development academically, emotionally, and socially.

Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree (minimum) in Education. Master's Degree in Educational Leadership or its equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience in a public school setting preferred.
  • Clearly demonstrated effective leadership within all areas of the school setting.
  • Ability to effectively interact with students, teachers, support staff, administrators, and families.

    Performance Responsibilities:
    Instructional Leadership/Student Achievement
  • Directs implementation of the approved district curriculum: development, implementation, revision, and evaluation of district curriculum using student achievement as the basis for this work.
  • Continually evaluating existing programs and practices, curriculum content, and pilot programs.
  • Oversees all testing scheduling and implementation within the building.
  • Make arrangements for special conferences between parents and teachers.
  • Conducts meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.
  • Orients newly assigned staff members and assists in their development.
  • Plans and manages Parent/Teacher Conferences, Open Houses, and similar events that encourage parental involvement.
  • Oversees the MTSS (Multi-tiered System of Support) intervention process.
  • Leads integration of instructional technology.
  • Full implementation of district curriculum, exemplary classroom, and M6 with fidelity.
  • Staff Evaluations
  • Participates in the selection of new teaching and support personnel.
  • Observing, counseling and motivating professional staff toward performances to attain the achievement goals of the district.
  • Plans, organizes and directs the evaluation of all staff on an annual basis consistent with district policy, contractual language and state/federal law.
  • Recommends, according to established procedures, the removal of a teacher or other staff member whose work is unsatisfactory.


  • General Administration
  • Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board Policies and regulations by the school's staff and students.
  • Utilizes to the fullest extent possible, all available facilities, materials and staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for his /her own professional development through membership and participation in the affairs of professional organizations.
  • Supervises the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and non-academic purposes.
  • Plans and supervises fire drills, tornado drills and emergency preparedness program.
  • Assumes responsibility for all official school correspondence and news releases.
  • School Culture
  • Developing, administering and coordinating all activities within the school building.
  • Maintaining an educational philosophy and school climate that leads to our mission-Ready to Teach-Ready to Learn.
  • Maintaining a standard of student behavior designed to command respect and minimize school and classroom disruptions.
  • Identifying intellectual, physical, social and emotional needs affecting students.
  • Establishes guides for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline.
  • Assumes the responsibility for the attendance, conduct and maintenance of the health of students.
  • Follow protocol with reporting incidents per district policy.
  • Become knowledgeable and implement with fidelity the district student and staff handbook.
  • Community Relations
  • Maintaining effective communication to keep all staff, students, and parents properly informed.
  • Maintains active relationships with students and parents.
  • Attends special events to promote students and families.
  • Assumes responsibility for all official school correspondence and new releases.
  • Financial Budgetary Management
  • Prepares and submits the school's budgetary requests and monitors expenditures of funds including state and federal programs that ensure all students have a fair and equal opportunity to a high-quality education.
  • Provides for adequate inventories of school property and for the security and accountability of that property.
  • Supervises purchasing activities from those accounts designated to the school.
  • Maintains control of the various local funds generated by school activities.
  • Seeks additional/alternative funding sources.

  • Salary, benefits, and calendar as established by the Harper Woods School District and commensurate with experience.
