The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time 1.0 FTE Research Consultant.
Under general direction from the Principal Investigator, Dr. Ali Rowhani-Rahbar, the Research Consultant will work closely members of the Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program (FIRPR) to conduct research related to extreme risk protection orders. FIPRP works alongside community, research, and policy partners to achieve its mission to inform, develop, and evaluate equitable programs, practices, and policies that prevent firearm-related harm. Our multidisciplinary team includes students, trainees, staff, and faculty across public health, medicine, social work, nursing, public policy, and law.
The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health is a large academic and research department. Faculty in the Department are fully engaged in research grant acquisition, instruction and mentoring, and service-based activities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Data analyses (40%)
Conduct complex qualitative and quantitative analyses for reports, grant preparation, and publication in peer reviewed journals.
Analyze qualitative data using narrative, inductive thematic, grounded theory, and situational analysis.
Identify and carry out the most appropriate quantitative analytic techniques for research questions of interest.
Identify and articulate strengths and weaknesses of each analytic approach.
Use statistical programs such as R, Stata, and MPlus to perform longitudinal quantitative data analyses from linked data sets for publication in peer reviewed journals and presentation to community and governmental partners.
Identify and conduct needed sensitivity analyses
Contextualize quantitative and qualitative findings given the limitations of each analytic technique.
Create detailed logic and conceptual models from qualitative data.
Generate plots summarizing quantitative data analyses
Data collection and management (35%)
Conduct qualitative interviews, observations, and focus groups.
Construct qualitative data via detailed and systematic analysis of court documents.
Process complex data requests for internal and external investigators and partners, including data set preparation, documentation, and updates.
Use probabilistic and deterministic linking methodologies to link administrative, health, and criminal legal system data. Perform data management activities
Oversee data verification and reconciliation processes
Develop strategies to maximize data quality for complex, linked data sets
Data Dissemination (15%)
Create data visualizations for qualitative and quantitative analyses for publication, reports, and presentations.
Create reports and presentations summarizing findings for academic, governmental, and community partners.
Respond to ad hoc reporting requests.
Assist with preparation of manuscripts and presentations.
Research design and methodology (10%)
Identify most appropriate design and methodologies for research questions of interest
Develop conclusions and identify corresponding new areas for research
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in a related health or social sciences field (eg: Public Health, Social Work, Criminal Justice, or related field).
Two years of experience working in research or practice.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to work independently with excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work effectively with all partners and team members, including experience working with people with diverse social identities, and working across differences with cultural humility.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Experience with qualitative research methods, analysis, interpretation, and visualization.
Experience with quantitative data analyses, interpretation, and visualization.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in firearm violence research, especially extreme risk or other protection orders and court records.
Experience writing technical reports, manuscripts, and publications, and preparing presentations.
Strong initiative, problem-solving and self-starting approach, flexibility, the ability to deal effectively with rapid growth and change, and the ability to organize and prioritize work quickly in response to changing needs.
Familiarity with IRB applications and procedures, managing confidential data collection and analysis, and maintaining ethical standards that guide research and evaluation.
Experience with R, STATA, or related programs.
Experience with qualitative analytic software (e.g., Dedoose, NVivo).
Experience with linking and integrating data across different sources and platforms.
