The 711 Human Performance Wing (HPW) advances human performance in air, space, and cyberspace through research, education, and consultation. The Wing supports the most critical Air Force resource - the operational military forces. The En Route Care Section needs to fill the DR-0858-02, Control Systems Engineer.
Position Duties include; but are not limited to:
Works with the 711 HPW/RH Core Technology Competency (CTC) Leads, Product Line Leads (PLLs), program managers, technical leads and corporate planning processes to integrate technical development efforts into the broader organizational strategy.

Required Qualifications
This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience at the next lower grade of position being advertised, or equivalent in other pay systems.

The Wing supports the most critical Air Force resource - the operational military forces. The En Route Care Section needs to fill the DR-0858-02, Control Systems Engineer.
Position Duties include; but are not limited to:
- Lead the development and integration of autonomous features, including closed-loop control systems, into medical devices used in aeromedical evacuation.
- Develop and optimize control algorithms to ensure precise and reliable device operation during patient transport.
- Conduct comprehensive simulations and real-world testing to validate control system performance under various conditions encountered in aeromedical settings.
- Work with a diverse team of military, government employees, government support contractors, and other stakeholders in developing, integrating, and implementing technical solutions to diverse, highly complex problems.
- Participates in integration and testing of software and hardware.
- Perform risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for potential control system failures.
- Create and maintain detailed documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and compliance reports.
- Provides program leadership and technical guidance on control theory, autonomous systems, and medical device technology.
- Ensure all control systems comply with relevant medical device regulations and standards (e.g., FAA, FDA, ISO, ASME V&V 40).
Works with the 711 HPW/RH Core Technology Competency (CTC) Leads, Product Line Leads (PLLs), program managers, technical leads and corporate planning processes to integrate technical development efforts into the broader organizational strategy.
- Serves as a technical task lead for applied medical research and product development efforts.
- Effectively plans and controls assigned resources. Conducts in-house technical activities and/or provides technical direction for contract efforts with minimal supervision.
- Designs, develops, and conducts research in en route care, especially pertaining to advances in medical science and technologies in the areas of patient movement, autonomous care, and ground medical capabilities.
- Receives general guidance in terms of policies, program objectives, and resources.
- Maintains currency with professional affiliations through scientific review, professional presentation, and interaction with other government and scientific agencies.

The employee must meet, or be capable of meeting, Defense Acquisition Work Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements applicable to the duties of the position.

Desired Qualifications
- MS in science or engineering
- Prior experience leading product development and the transition of products to customers, to include developing technology transition plans/agreements
- Experience or demonstrated knowledge of the various FDA regulations, guidelines, and standards applicable to medical devices, including approval pathways for 510k, De Novo, PMA, IDE, and IND processes
- Previous experience with En Route Care or similar Defense Health research areas
- Knowledge of Air Force operations, objectives, principles, and methods
- Ability to multitask with strong organizational skills
- Experience in mission, major issues, program goals and objectives, work processes, and operations of the Directorate
- Knowledge of management and organizational principles and practices
- Experience in the design and development of control systems, preferably within the medical device or aerospace industry
- Experience with embedded systems, real-time operating systems, and safety-critical applications
- Knowledge of medical device regulations and standards and aeromedical regulations
- Strong understanding of closed-loop control principles, automatic control theory, and system dynamics
- Proficiency in control system simulation and modeling tools (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink)
