About Our District

The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 27,000 students. Purpose of Position

Under general supervision of the Assistant Director of Building Services - Facilities and direct supervision of Manager of Engineer Facilities, this position is responsible for a wide variety of duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, air conditioning, and temperature control systems, etc. in all Madison Metropolitan School District facilities. The position requires varied working hours and availability on an emergency basis.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performing HVAC work associated with maintenance and repair activities, as assigned.
  • Installing new HVAC work associated with remodeling work.
  • Visiting each building frequently and being familiar with the various HVAC systems and components.
  • Participating in hands-on repairs, installation, and maintenance of HVAC systems and components.
  • Servicing and maintaining low pressure steam and hot water boilers.
  • Installing, maintaining and repairing DDC and pneumatic controls.
  • Troubleshooting, installing and setting up Variable Frequency Drive (VFD).
  • Estimating and procuring materials.
  • Maintaining records of materials and labor associated with assigned work.
  • Overseeing HVAC work of others and providing training on mechanical maintenance procedures.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot and repair HVAC refrigeration equipment along with required certification to perform this work in the State of Wisconsin (EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Handling Technician Certification preferred).
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and troubleshoot HVAC equipment control problems.
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from construction plans, shop drawings and material specifications.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with co-workers, contractors, technical consultants, students, and the public.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes, regulations and ordinances relating to construction activities and specifically with HVAC work.
  • Knowledge of major types of HVAC installations, their common and unusual breakdowns, and standard repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of and experience with pneumatic, electronic and DDC control systems.
  • Knowledge of the safety requirements, state code and general orders of the Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations, and the laws relating to construction.
  • Knowledge of and ability with HVAC rough-in work.
  • Skill in the use of all tools common to the HVAC trade.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Increasing progressive responsibility with HVAC service experience as a journey worker.
  • Progressive and successful experience as a Journey Worker steamfitter by an appropriate authority or documented training and experience equivalent to a journey worker.
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward one's own cultural competence (i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas)
  • Hold a valid Wisconsin drivers license (may require use of a personal vehicle).
  • Satisfactory driving record (all driving records will be checked).
  • State of Wisconsin "HVAC Qualifier Certification" preferred.


Physical and Sensory Requirements
  • This job is physically demanding - medium to heavy work.
  • There is constant standing, walking, and moving depending on day to day tasks. There will be frequent pushing and pulling of loads up to 70+ pounds. There is frequent bending, stooping, and utilizing proper lifting techniques loads up to 50+ pounds. There is frequent sitting, driving, squatting, crouching, ladder and stair climbing, able to handle 30 ft heights, crawling, reaching, kneeling, lifting up to 75 pounds, and repetitive movements with both hands. Verbal and auditory communication is frequently used. Near and far vision acuity, depth perception, accommodation, field of vision, and feeling are frequently utilized.


Environmental Adaptability
  • May require working outdoors, evenings and weekends. Occasional shift and work location changes may also be required.
  • May involve exposure to asbestos and lead based surfaces.
